Both of Gordon's kids are named after he and his wife. The boy is Jim jr.

The series doesn't need to progress in the same manner the story has always gone; thus, Barbara may not be his wife.

I agree that it is a nice start to the second season. Hopefully they slow down a bit and let things develop instead of simply tossing a new bad guy out each week. I particularly like that this remains the story of Jim Gordon with Wayne in the background (for now).
