Re: Nature v Nurture in Youth Rugby

The kid seems fast for a big boy, but unless he grows up to be 8 feet tall and 400lbs it's hard to see how he's going to replicate these feats once everyone grows up too. Just in case, possibly he should learn to sidestep and pass. Instead he seems to be just stiff-arming kids half his size, while t...

Re: Wrestling vs BJJ

Disregarding the heavy breathing from mike.b about styles (what, 3 different BJJ gyms in a year, then Judo, and now we're all about The Manly Art of Boxing?)... BJJ does have a problem, as does Judo. If you train with a 70/30 split (or worse), thing you do 30% (or worse) of the time and don't bring ...

Re: Jacob's Ladder?

Tried it a few times. Excruciatingly boring, even by the low standards of machine cardio. Bike or treadmill permits zoning out, C2 has a nice groove you can get into. This had neither. No-one else seemed to like this thing either and it disappeared eventually. Much the same problem as a VersaClimber...

Re: Programming whilst training BJJ

I really like this Sub. You always come up with nice looking programs to complement Martial Arts training. I would add as much LSD/LISS/Slow Cardio (whatever the fuck they call it now) as possible. Just do something that gets your HR between 120-140 and keep it there for 45 minutes (or more). Helps...

Re: Pajama arts (BJJ) plus weight training

"Levering"? Like a kind of twist or side-to-side stuff at the wrist? I think Hatfield called this "Thor's Hammer" if we're thinking the same thing. I have a length of metal bar in my garage marked off with 'distance off center' for doing this sort of thing and I like it - rotation and side-to-side s...

Re: Pajama arts (BJJ) plus weight training

Updates on what I'm actually doing, for anyone that cares. I built up an elaborate program and wound up complying with about two thirds of it - always the first part of the week. Which actually seems to be working pretty well so I'm going to pretend that was my intention all along. Monday is squats ...

Re: Pajama arts (BJJ) plus weight training

Thanks all for interesting contributions. I have a competition coming up so no innovations until after that, but will work on a new program after that. Still trying to decide on the balance between minimalism vs "do all my favorites", intensity vs volume, etc. etc.

Pajama arts (BJJ) plus weight training

Anecdotes, wild assertions, etc. wanted on combining weight training with 3-4x/week of BJJ (Gracie Barra). BJJ seems to be taking care of general conditioning and middle-aged jackoffitude but I feel weaker (and more fragile) than I could be and want to go back to the weights. No real injuries aside ...

Already got a shout-out to the couch thread in the comments: http://www.slate.com/id/2281700/ Hello to our new friends from Slate I guess - if any read this far. Only mention of anything above 465 that isn't a fail is a "495, 515 (old PR), 525 (new PR)". Also a 585 fail. All the same guy. Who puts 10 lbs on their 515lb PR, then tries a 60lbs jump? Nothing big in metric either, so it's not like they are hiding from my regular expression scanning powers using ...

This is fucking stupid. You can't just make up random wikipedia entries according to your own rules and then whine about 'Wikipedia Nazis' deleting pages that don't fit the wikipedia format. The place for a critique of crossfit is on the crossfit entry if anywhere, but I expect that to be subject to...

Re: The couch thread

Looks enough like a younger (!) couch to pass for me. Seriously, how many gym-NASTs can't do a front and back lever?

Couch's gymnastics career is shouded in mystery. Somewhere he has a buncha trophies with 'participant' on them IMO, as if he'd ever won anything, we'd have heard about it.

Bumpers and oly lifting are preffered by @f because it is a way to look badass with little work. Bumpers are deceiving and make you look stronger than you are. i was using bumpers at a @f gym last week and couldn't put collars on with 295lbs! Oly is so rare in gyms that a 135 power clean or even a ...

1. They emphasize “functional” movement rather than gym machines, etc. I'm not sure what "functional" movement is, but I'd rather see people doing multijoint lifts with barbells and things rather than sitting in a machine and grinding out reps while chewing gum. 2. I like the photo with Shari's daddy. He's got a haunted look, like he's hearing Chris Rock yell "Your only job is - keep your daughter off the pole" in continuous play somewhere inside his head.

Damn.
