How to be Idle and The Freedom Manifesto

I picked up these two books based on a recommendation from Abandoned by Wolves and have been enjoying the shit out of them. (Thanks ABW, good call!) I figured these gems deserved their own thread. How to be Idle The Freedom Manifesto From Publishers Weekly When your alarm clock jolts you awake in th...

Financially Stupid People are Everywhere

This is a new book about the recent economic troubles that I picked up just because I liked the title. The basic premise of it is that this entire country is set up so that everyone (govt, banks, big business) is trying to take your money at all times. I know this isn't exactly a news flash, but he ...

Since his recent death Bobby's book is available now for the first time in years. (In algebraic notation too.) http://www.bookmarked.com.au/images/T/my_60_memorable_games.JPG I also really enjoyed Tal's book. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/518U6sPF%2BXL._SL500_AA300_.jpg White King and Red Qu...

The Herd kicked major ass in Vietnam.

Thanks for the heads up about this Tim. I read Jungers article in Vanity Fair back in 08 and have been waiting for this book to come out.

Bad Lieutenant: New Orleans

I'll just start off by saying that I'm a huge fan of both the original film with Harvey Keitel and of Werner Herzog's directing. I also hate Nicolas Cage and lately consider him to be a very reliable 'bad movie warning sign' indicator. That being said...I enjoyed the shit out of this movie. Werner h...

Poldark

There was something in the paper about this last month saying "cult British show on dvd for the first time" etc... That was all it took for me to queue it up. It's similar to The Sandbaggers in that they only made a few episodes and it has a bit of a cult following. Poldark is a BBC show f...

Re: The Art of Learning by Josh Waitzkin

He never made Grandmaster. I guess they over-hyped him. I enjoyed his dad's book and the movie though. I was wondering if he ever achieved Grandmaster status. He got close, International Master IIRC. (Victor Korchnoi once said that no sane person could ever become a Grandmaster.) You can check out ...

Re: The Economist

I'm addicted to the Economist. They were talking about the shit going down in South Ossetia and Georgia months before it happened. (Yeah, Katie Couric dropped the ball on that one. I guess Paris Hilton had a new hairdo that week.) To the guys who complain that half of it is boring...I never read the...

Re: The Billionaire's Vinegar

It's funny you posted this since I just finished reading it a few weeks back. I got it based on the review in the Economist and I really enjoyed it. I don't know much about wine but it was still a very interesting read. Wallace is a really talented writer but it seems like he wrote the book just a b...

I liked it a lot.

It's very similar to Herbert's Destination:Void. (With some Silent Running mixed in.)

Dead Snow

This is a new Nazi zombie movie from Norway. It's a comedy with a lot of references to the Evil Dead films. Even though it's pretty funny, they don't hold back on the gore at all. (The director is particularly fond of entrails.) There is a lot of brutal killing action and a good time was had by all....

But don't miss the movie, it's a really great un-PC show. (Mitsuko was fucking hot.)
