Copperheads

Post by Turdacious »

By Jennifer Weber.

The book's a study of the Union peace faction during the Civil War. She uses a balanced group of sources (newspapers, cartoons, letters, speeches, etc...) to paint a picture of the Copperheads and their opponents. She also points out the threat of Western secession, how they viewed the Confederates (and vice versa), and how they affected the political situation to come.

She doesn't make compare and contrast them and the modern anti-war movement-- anyone with a decent grasp of modern history will do that on their own pretty easily.

This is best book on politics or the Civil War I've read in a long time-- it's relatively short, focused, with little editorializing, and very readable. Highly recommended
