JAMA. 2008;299(24):2847.

The Food and Drug Administration has found hazardous levels of chromium and selenium in bodybuilding supplements linked to serious adverse events.

Tests by agency scientists found that samples of Total Body Formula in tropical orange and peach nectar flavors and Total Body Mega Formula in orange/tangerine flavor contained up to 3426 µg of chromium and 40 800 µg of selenium per serving. According to the National Institutes of Health's Office of Dietary Supplements, the daily recommended dose of chromium for an adult is 35 to 45 µg; for selenium, the daily recommended dose of selenium is about 55 µg.

The National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed that more than 200 individuals in 10 states have experienced adverse reactions after taking these products. Such reactions have typically occurred after 5 to 10 days of taking the products and included hair loss, muscle cramps, diarrhea, joint pain, deformed fingernails, and fatigue.

The products have been voluntarily recalled by their distributor, Total Body Essential Nutrition of Atlanta, and consumers are advised to discard them.
