Any gamblers on IGX?

Post by DikTracy6000 »

Maybe a few people here bet on sports? My gut says probably very few. Anyway, the Supreme Court struck down a law prohibiting sports betting. It's now up to the states on how to implement. A few like Utah, will probably never do it. I also heard that Disney is lobbying Florida to delay it for as long as possible. I personally haven't bet on any professional sports except horse racing in decades, and don't plan to in the future. The bookies'(Vegas) lines on pro and college football made it too tough for my limited study of the game. The states will able to set their rake(takeout) percentage on sports bets. We're already dealing with a 15% to 25% takeout on horse racing. Typically as I understand it, take-outs on sports may be in the 6.5% area. So where they're on site with a casino/horse race facility, there will be a fight since it competes with that already too high takeout.
(edit): I do find it ironic that MLB(baseball) along with all the other pro sports want a 1% cut of the total action, and they've kicked out Pete Rose for gambling on baseball. Maybe he'll now be eligible to go into HOF with this commissioner. There's also speculation that before televised games there will be sports betting shows to help drum up business. Pete would be the ideal host or analyst.

I'd be tempted to make a few pesos, since there'd be betters inside and outside the stadium making huge bucks off of my unpaid efforts.

The idea of broad gambling on amateur sports made me think of this documentary I watched the other night. Good stuff...

If you guys want to make pesos by gambling learn about financial futures markets. Best risk/reward ratios. Even currency trading, though more difficult for other reasons. My honest opinion.

I am surprised. Some time ago when I suggested realty as a good way to invest and make money pretty much everyone rejected the idea. While gambling on sports where the odds are set by a bookie does not seem like a bad idea.

In Australia sports betting is legal and every sporting event is interrupted by several adverts of this kind. One of them features Samuel Jackson, who explains in a calm and confident voice that with this betting company you are simply guaranteed to make money.

I strongly dislike Samuel L. Jackson. And when did you suggest realty as a good investment? I'd like to read that.

I've invested in Crypto - I think that counts as gambling.

I actually re-read that thread today when I was doing a search and came across it. Dunn was asking for financial investment advice. A search of stocks or investments would get you to it - if I weren't so damn lazy I would find it again, but my fridge is making this gawdawful noise and I can't concentrate too much now.

Samuel Jackson is an actor who actually plays the same role in most movies since Pulp Fiction.

I am not sure how it works in USA, but in Australia when running adverts like these they run a small print text of a disclaimer at the same time. Obviously, nobody notices. It's quite hilarious in radio adverts: after the advert they run the disclaimer at high speed.

Disclaimer or not, advertizing gambling is plain unethical.

Why is it unethical? People have gambled since the dawn of time. Everyone knows gamblers are degenerates, but acknowledging that fact and making money off of them is just plain good business. It's like alcohol or tobacco, if people are going to do it anyway, you might as well turn a buck.

I still don't understand. Anyone and everyone that wants to get a bet down TODAY can do so with very little effort. Especially on college campuses. There is a bookie in every dorm.

A player could be paid by gambling syndicates to under-perform in a game and affect the outcome/spread.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

This is true. It's still not clear though how having a betting kiosk (or bettors inside and outside the stadium) would make it more likely that a player would try and throw a game? Not sure this is what Nafod meant anyway.
