There are so many scenes I love in this movie.
Here is one

Did you ever surf at night. While I was in Southern California in 1977 one of our employees said he did. I thought he was telling the truth.
I used to go to Laguna Beach (I think) and watch the surfers (I was on a business trip and had no time to try it out until the last week when I took a vacation and went to Encinitas)
I remember one day at Laguna Beach there were not many people in the water and a lot of people on land. This was probably around 7:30 AM. One guy got a tube ride (what's it called now - getting shacked or barrelled) and people were screaming. It was an amazing sight.
One of my favorite lines and in many ways I have tried to live my life is when Bodhi says the human spirit is still alive.
starting at 1 hour and 13 minutes into the movie. for about one minute long

After about a week at one of America's elite Ive League undergraduate programs, I rebelled and decided I will no longer memorize for tests. I want to learn so i read books on different subjects, didn't attend classes all that often, stayed up all night talking to people from Mexico, and different parts of the United States I had never been to and knew nothing about - New England, California. That was my beginning of the rejection of the cultural model of success I had grown up with. Get a degree, a good job, marry, have children, live in the suburbs.
I got a number of degrees - MA psychology from a school that was a learning community where the average student age was in the mid 30s and the teachers were willing to learn from the students and vice versa. It was one of the most amazing educational experiences i ever had. The founder with a PhD in psychology said we learned more practical therapeutic skills and interventions than we did in his degree program.
To everything there is a price. For me to write this and pay attention I can not do anything else.
I am trying to get healthy and got over a virus after a number of months. Emotional health is a long battle. This teaching from a few thousand years ago is something that means a lot to me.
Hillel the Elder’s famous teaching from Pirkei Avot 1:14 is: "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?" It emphasizes a vital balance between self-care, community responsibility, and immediate action.
I look at it differently Right now I need to take care of my health as the primary consideration. Think of a see-saw that kids play on. I got way out of balance. I was thinking of others way too much and how to help them - not at all successfully. I have to take care of myself right now. I use two words to guide me in this goal. Healthy Me I have written it down on paper.

Lenny,
The scene you shared about the human spirit is representative of a new term I learned yesterday:
Moral Licensing
When you make up a story to make yourself feel good when you know you’re doing something bad.
I don’t think armed robbery represents the human spirit, he’s merely engaging in mental gymnastics to justify selfish and anti-social behavior.
I’ve surfed once at night! Paddled out around 10pm with my two roommates and surfed until 1130pm on a cloudless, windless August full moon. The water was so still that I could see the stars through the waves as I ducked under them. The waves were small and fun.
Magical!
And yes: tubed, barreled, shacked, etc.
Surf language hasn’t changed much haha
Good luck with all your ambitions and don’t let the chi flow stop!
