Speak of the devil, that idiot Ferriss was in the crowd.

I like that the hustler opened with b4. You don't see the Orangutan played too often. I read that's what Kubrick used to open with.

Vern (and anyone else who's a bit of a chess student), I've read about the Orangutan before, but never looked at in depth.

Here's a good analysis of how to play it, or against it:

Thanks Bram. Years ago when I read that Kubrick played b4, I gave it a few tries on my computer and got thrashed.

Maybe I'll give it another go. (It's good to catch the guys at the coffee house off guard.)

FWIW here's Dzindzichashvili's take on it...

One of my favorite Kubrick chess stories involved the actor Tony Burton.

While filming The Shining, Burton (he played the gas station owner who rents Scatman a car) was only supposed to be on set for one week. But while there he actually beat Kubrick in a game.

Apparently, nobody else on The Shining crew was good at chess so Kubrick kept Burton around for another five weeks on the payroll. He said that he never won another game but that Stanley just enjoyed the competition.

When White, I often open with a roundhouse right from i0. It rattles even the most accomplished chess master.

Is shifting the pieces from where they're meant to be native to NY "street" chess, or did Maurice genuinely just die a little inside when he caught that other guy cheating?

It's cheating.

This was on Reddit the other day. Cheating is part of the hustle.

Oh, then that settles it unless the HuffPo disagrees.
