What's the consensus

Post by Sangoma » Thu Aug 20, 2015 5:56 am

Among the knowledgeable brethren: kipping or not kipping pull-ups? I personally think kipping pull-ups are stupid, but I don't know much anyway. Is there an advantage to kipping?

I think they're a bad idea. If performed by people who don't have the requisite strength to perform full chins or pull ups, they could be harmful & if people don't do anything else, they will likely not learn proper form, for what that's worth.

According to the couch thread, kipping pullups give you gonorrhea.

If you actually no-shit want to get your ass above a bar or ledge some day because you think your life depends on it (someone yells "SHARK" while you are swimming off of a pier) you will kip like a mother-fucker. At least I did.
Don’t believe everything you think.

The KIP: Like naf suggested, it's used to mount apparatus in gymnastics. For the young, it doesn't seem to be a big deal, for the brittle, the kip is probably a bad idea.

For muscular development, the kip is probably less effective

Probably. I offered the opposite view when he asked the question a few moments later.

As a transition, the kipping pull-up has some value. As an exercise for a (high) prescribed number of reps, it's pretty fucking stupid.

Yup. That's a transition. If the goal is efficiently moving your body through space, the kip makes sense.

Also, absolutely would.
