Power Bar thread

Post by Polo Tomasi » Wed Sep 09, 2015 1:24 pm

I remember awhile back reading through a thread discussing powerlifting bars. I'm now finally looking into buying one, but can't find the thread. My search skills are sadly lacking.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Texas Power bar from XLathlete.com is the cheapest place to get a TPB...but it will take about 4 weeks. What can you say? Made in America by Buddy Caps STILL. This bar is the standard bar that I measure all of my training bars against. You can do olympic lift variants on it, but this is, at heart, a powerlifting bar.

http://store.xlathlete.com/Texas-Power- ... werbar.htm $239 plus shipping

Jesup Gym's power bar...cheap, rugged, solid-for a long time, this solid, chinese made bar was the go to for garage gyms. Not great spin, not a lot of flex.

OB86 – 7ft 1,500lb test power bar. 1-1/4″ diameter. Good strong knurl designed for heavy powerlifting. $175.00

Rogue sells a number of bars around the $300 price point...most of them are decent all purpose bars with good spin for the crossfit type olympic lifting activities.

Get Rx'd - these guys are local to me. Work mostly with Chinese manufactured materials. That said, they have a good price point and I have one of their technique bars I use for my wife and daughter since it's 15#. I might pick up one of these instead of ordering a Rogue bar since I wouldn't have to pay shipping.

The other bar I have is an Ivanko power bar that was given to me. It's the best bar I have, but I tend to use the TPB for 99% of my lifting.

Another strong endorsement for the Texas Power bar. It is the go to bar at our gym. We have probably 12 of them and they all get used heavily.

I was already leaning towards the Buddy Capps TPB; looks very nice. It's good to see some glowing reviews. $300 on eBay, $239 @ Xathlete. I think I can wait a few weeks and save $60.
I'll post my impressions when it arrives.

Change of plan. The site on Ebay offers free shipping, and it arrives on 9/16. Xathlete charges shipping, and the price difference is ~$20, in order to wait 5-6 weeks. I'll spend the 20 and have it next week. Hopefully.

Yes I know that I got lucky.

The odd thing was I received an e-mail on 9/14/15 stating that the bar was shipped. That e-mail came from Cal Dietz of XL or appeared to.
The e-mail did not give a tracking number so I e-mailed Cal Dietz and asked if he could give me a tracking number. Cal e-mailed right back
and said the bar was manufactured by Capp and usually took at least 21 days to ship. I knew that from what BD and you, Shaf, had posted
on this thread.

Looking at the tube the bar was encased in I see that it came directly from Capp by Fedex so Capp must have somehow initiated the e-mail
to me letting me know it was shipped.

Mine just showed up. I didn't get an email, tracking number, or anything.

I think I could drive to Capp's place now in about 4 hours to get the bar.

Don't do it Shaf. I googled TPB and found another site with posts about Buddy Capp's place and the Texas Power bar.

One guy said he was 20 minutes from Buddy's welding shop in 2014. He met Buddy and said he was a swell guy but could not
directly sell him a bar. There was another distributor then, not XL, so Buddy may have had some legal agreement not
to wholesale the bars. Or maybe there was business license red tape Buddy did not want to mess with.

Whatever the reason Buddy Capps performed amazingly fast service for me so I have nothing but the highest praise
for him. :prayer:

American made manufacturing too. :finga:

Mine arrived in 5 days. Very nice. I've only used it once, and haven't loaded it heavily, but it's a beautiful thing.
How did I live without it?
Thanks for the recommendations.

The TPB is just the standard. There are better bars, sure, but it hits the sweet spot so nice

It seems like anything better than the TPB is just a more specialized bar. There are way way better weightlifting bars for sure. Good DL bars like the Okie and special squat bars like the Mastodon that's really nice for heavy squats. But for a general purpose bar, I've not seen anything better. I'm sure it's out there but don't know what it would be.

I was thinking the phenomenal durability of the Ivanko power bar. However, the TPB is the perfect bar for a dude who likes to lift's main barbell, I used mine over the cheapo New York BB 1500# test bar or the Ivanko.

A gym I used to visit had some honest-injun Eleiko training bars (not competition, but still). I wasn't, and am not, strong enough to appreciate the finer points of rigidity vs whip, etc, but those were some sweet ass bars.
