2009.07.16PM; jiujitsu...rolled with a couple of decent blue belts for an hour and a half, one bigger than me and one much smaller but very athletic. It was good, and I forced myself to always hunt for the top mount and cross lapel, and also to give up a lot of positions for the smaller guy. Aloha!

2009.07.17PM; had school till late evening but decided to a quick late night session of cleans, to get the ball rolling right away for the Columbus Day Mesoamerican Massacre. I don't think I can even do one rep with 176 right now, and I have volunteered for 30 minutes of them. My goal is 3 a minute for the full 30 minutes, which may be a pipe dream but seemed like a worthy and perhaps possible goal. Anyway, here was the down payment, getting my groove back.

1. Naihanchi Shodan x 10
2. 2KB Clean 5 x 3 @ 2 x 16 kgs.

Aloha!

2009.07.18AM; jiujitsu...I think I stayed up too late after class drinking whiskey and doing karate and power cleans. Dragged ass into class and did some interesting attacks from side control, then half an hour of rolling. I wasn't very impressive, but the work got done. Aloha!

This is exactly the plan I had when they formalized the challenge.

Fats,
what's with the Naihanchi? Just to mix it up a bit, or is there a specific goal?

Steve, I became aware about a year and a half ago that I was getting less mobile on my feet, less flexible and slower with footwork and kicks. So, I've been adding in kihon workouts where I just practice punching, kicking, taisabaki footwork and Naihanchi kata. The idea is to just keep myself light on my feet with a strong stance and a fast punch.

2009.07.19AM; karate and weights.

1. Naihanchi Shodan x 10
2. Cleans 3 x 3 @ 2 x 16 kgs.
3. Cleans 3 x 3 @ 2 x 24 kgs.
4. Cleans 5 x 1 @ 2 x 32 kgs.

Aloha!

2009.07.22PM; jiujitsu...rolled with Brett and then, in a fit of uncharacteristic mercy and overlooking my lack of talent and many shortcomings Relson promoted me to brown belt in Relson Gracie Jiujitsu.

Aloha!

PS And be cause I was hyped, I sipped some whiskey and did this little workout for the coming IGX challenge.

1. Cleans 3 x 3 @ 2 x 16 kgs.
2. Cleans 3 x 3 @ 2 x 24 kgs.
3. Cleans 3 x 1 @ 2 x 32 kgs.

Fatty is going for your throat.

If there's one karate kata that martial artists who aren't primarily karateka should practice, it's Naihanchi/Tekki shodan. It teaches short range power generation using a less-than-optimal stance for punching, and the hip movements that drive the punches also produce the pulls you might use to start a throw or set up other standing jujitsu techniques. The later is something I should have known, but didn't really learn until I started training with Darth and company.

Congrats on the brown belt!

Brown Belt! Congratulations my friend. Your dedication to hard training, and well rounded knowledge of so much martial technology and history is incredible. You deserved this. Now wait for the Black Belts to make life hard on you for a while. But you know that already.. =D>

One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.
