Makes perfect sense. I've got a link to a home-brew stone mold if you need, although I'm sure google can return 25,000 similar links in .25 seconds.

2009.11.04PM; spent the day running around Kauai for work, so no jiujitsu but I wanted to do something, so did my barbell exercise.

I will hold at this poundage for a week or two until I do 3 x 10 with each, possibly around next Wednesday. At that time I will stop for a week and then begin anew.

1. Two Arm Press 1 x 9 @ 115 lbs.
2. Two Arm Curl 1 x 9 @ 65 lbs.
3. KB Floor Press 1 x 6 @ 2 x 72 lbs.
4. Supine Grip Bent Rowing 1 x 9 @ 115 lbs.
5. Squat 1 x 9 @ 115 lbs.
6. Stiff Legged Dead Lift 1 x 9 @ 115 lbs.
7. Calf Raise 1 x 25 @ 115 lbs.

Aloha!

2009.11.05Pm; jiujitsu...rolled with a big fat blue belt. He's something of a physical retard, so it was less of a challenge than it sounds like. Did that for about an hour, interrupting it to describe some ideas I was trying to communicate to him. By the end he was just trying to mad elephant me, but for a while it was profitable.

It's interesting when you can see how people when they feel stressed, and when they feel fatigued, their creative higher thinking faculties just fold up.

Aloha!

Naturally, the weights don't appear impressive but this was a grueling workout. New wrinkles are that I will include time elapsed and volume, so that I can track it over time.

I am kicking around the idea of writing a book, or perhaps my doctoral thesis, on the fusion of western principles of stress managements and psychotherapy with yogic approaches to the same, or similar, issues. Does anyone think this is fruitful or interesting? I have a teacher who basically did the same thing in regard to Chinese approaches, and he made a career out of it. Does this sound interesting? Think of how people latched onto the hindu squats and pushups when Furey brought them into the public sphere.

2009.11.11PM; jiujitsu...rolled with a very scrappy white belt for an hour. I have to say he was very good; he said he had been at it for 10 months but I believe he may have had some wrestling experience as well, as he was proficient with his front headlock. Anyway, I tapped him many, many times, but he showed me a lot of quality technique and fighting spirit.

I am teaching tomorrow night and I have a light bodybuilding workout scheduled for later tonight around 9:30 PM. Hail Satan.

Aloha!

2009.11.12PM; jiujitsu...disappointing turn out for classes tonight. I had one child for an hour and one adult, so I customized their classes to precisely their needs.

The kid had to be coaxed into analyzing his problems, but when he finally got down to thinking of it he had a totally logical issue: he could pass his friend's guard but he couldn't stabilize his side control long enough to finish the guy. The other kid would squirm back to guard and he would have to start all over. Story of my life. So after a warm up of squats, pushups, jumping jacks and some forward and backward breakfalls and rolls, we broke his problem into three parts.

First, we worked on how to prevent an opponent from replacing his guard by interposing a hand between his hips and yours, or by controlling the near leg with a grip on the pants. Second, we practice the basic side control, so that once he had the side position, he could establish real control and rest if he needs it. Third, we did three basic attacks from side, the kimura, americana, and paper cutter choke. His mom came early and his face kinda fell when we had to stop. He made me promise to finish the lesson next Thursday, so it seemed like he was having fun.

After that I had one military guy, a thirty year old white belt. We rolled and then broke out various problems and solutions. I also helped him learn a transition from side to mount that I used several times on him and he asked about. I mostly played for positions to gauge his knowledge and responsiveness, so that if he work together in the future I have a sense for what he knows. It wasn't a lot, but he seemed open minded and affable.

Aloha!

Great training Mak and your book idea sounds great. I think it has the potential to do very well.

Sounds like a great idea for a book, and a career. Good luck with it.

Mahalo for the feedback, Grim.

2009.11.14AM; jiujitsu....had to do an interview this morning and then edit a paper, so I spent the morning in the office. Finished up at 11:00 and dipped into the academy, rolled no-gi with a couple of moderately decent guys for an hour and then split. Nothing but walking and stretching until next Wednesday's jiujitsu session.

2009.11.18PM; jiujitsu...rolled for an hour with big Andy, mostly just wrestling him. I would work him to a pin in side control and then if I didn't (which I did not) finish him in a short amount of time I would have to let him up. Once he escaped to standing and once he reversed me, but then I swept him shortly after that to replace control.

He's immensely strong and can easily press my bodyweight, so controlling him is tough but I couldn't quite get a tap out of him. On the other hand, I can take him down at will and dominate all positions, and the one time he did get on top he couldn't make it last, but still it's a problem that I struggled to get a submission. My skill is better, but his attributes make closing the deal a very risky deal.

Afterwards we spent some time talking about takedown strategies; he said he liked Osotogari, so I showed him the classic renzoku-waza of osoto-gari to ouchi-gari into kouchi-gari. So we drilled that a bit and then called it a night.

Aloha!

Judo, I never learned harai goshi or its makikomi version so I can't teach it, but I can kinda visualize it. Can you find a clip? If I go to reap his left leg with my left, which way do I attack harai goshi?

His counter to o soto will be to plow to his right front corner or straight on, to alleviate the weight on his attacked leg and get his center of gravity moving forward. Turn about 135degrees, with your right leg as post and sweep harai.

He turns a little farther through on the harai, although 1:06 looks smoother.
