Good luck with the book, sounds like a great idea. Where I live, yoga and therapists seem to be everywhere.

2009.11.25PM; jiujitsu and bodybuilding...in da club after work. Warmed up assisting a blue belt with some drills when he lacked for a partner. Then put in an hour working with one of the larger and more advanced blues I have selected for my own use. He had a hard hour; I tried to focus on stopping myself from ripping through things and consciously thinking out problems in the most efficient ways possible. I am going to start utilizing handicaps like this more often as I am kind of lacking for solid opposition right now.

Went home, took a shower, had dinner, watched Up with my wife (*sniffle*) then did this, Wednesday's light workout (.65*[3*10RM]).

1. Two Arm Press 3 x 8 @ 75 lbs. = lbs.
2. Two Arm Curl 3 x 8 @ 55 lbs. = lbs.
3. BB Floor Press 3 x 8 @ 2 x 75 lbs. = lbs.
4. Bent Rowing 3 x 8 @ 75 lbs. = lbs.
5. Squat 3 x 8 @ 75 lbs. = lbs.
6. Stiff Legged Dead Lift 3 x 8 @ 75 lbs. = lbs.
7. Calf Raise 1 x 60 @ 75 lbs. = lbs.

Elapsed Time: 36:30
Volume: ?

Too tired to calculate volumes now.

Aloha!

DREADER THAN DREAD
As in Otherland?

I was thinking about your writing idea. Having done both, I've always been intrigued by the similarities in the process of psychotherapy and coaching (or "sensei'ing"). I was thinking it would be cool to do a paper on an aspect of this relationship. The presenting "problems" are of course different in the two venues, but the material dealt with and the processes seemed to me to be uncannily similar. After all, where ever you go - there you are, neh?

In any case sounds like you are on to something!

No, I hadn't heard of Otherland until now. It's an old Rastafarian term for the end times. Psychotherapy is a type of coaching, to be sure, preparing people to perform at a higher level by optimizing mental processes. Sounds like an interesting paper.

2009.12.02PM; jiujitsu & bodybuilding...started off with an email this afternoon asking me to teach, so I had that in mind but when I got there some other brown belt wanted to, so I lucked out and just trained with a couple of good guys.

AJ is a smaller but ultra-capable purple belt and Sid is an old warhorse brown belt, but we traded 3:00 minute rounds for the better part of an hour. When they were tuckered out I just took turns passing guard with Sid; I actually managed to shut down his passes with a nice kimura from half guard. Training with weights is of course making a big difference, however I am trying to avoid just using strength to over power people. What I enjoy most is the noticeably quicker movements and muscular endurance.

Came home, had some roast beef, sweet potatoes, and snap peas and a large glass of a Napa Valley Merlot. Tucked in my family and then after a digestive I turned my attention to Wednesday's light workout.

1. Two Arm Press 3 x 9 @ 75 lbs. = 2025 lbs.
2. Two Arm Curl 3 x 9 @ 65 lbs. = 1755 lbs.
3. BB Floor Press 3 x 9 @ 75 lbs. = 2025 lbs.
4. Bent Rowing 3 x 9 @ 75 lbs. = 2025 lbs.
5. Squat 3 x 9 @ 125 lbs. = 2025 lbs.
6. Stiff Legged Dead Lift 2 x 9 @ 75 lbs. = 2025 lbs.
7. Calf Raise 3 x 30 @ 75 lbs. = 6750 lbs.

Elapsed Time: 25:10
Volume: 18,630 lbs.

2009.12.03PM; jiujitsu....crazy rainstorm so things got going a bit late. Rolled for an hour with a gentleman Marine, a blue belt named Joel, who was visiting from Papa John Gorman, Gracie Barra in Virginia/DC Metroplex. Nice guy, maybe not the sharpest jiujitsu, but eager to learn.

Anyway, I rolled him up for an hour while other guys filtered in, then taught a class. First half an hour was getting mount from side control, and the second half hour was on the cross lapel, ezekiel, and armbar from mount. We had a couple of Marines and a couple of regular folk, a good mix, and they seemed to like it but even still I could see I was challenging them to keep up. It's hard to please a group that spans two weeks to ten years of experience, but they all seemed to appreciate what I was trying to communicate. Anyway, two solid hours, and I even played around with Marco's "peg" a little bit. I have always avoided the deep underhook, but it seems like an effective medium.

Aloha!

2009.12.05AM± jiujitsu....did a day's seminar with Carlson Gracie Jr. We worked on a variety of things, especially sweeps from De La Riva, passing De La Riva or submitting as you pass. Then he took some questions from the brown belts so we did a grab bag: attacks from Knee on Belly position (my question), crucifix entries, another De La Riva sweep, etc. Good times.

2009.12.07PM; Pearl Harbor Day...took my final exam, came home and had my wife's lamb and potatoes, and then did the last heavy day of this cycle. It wasn't easy, and took me nearly a full hour to complete.

1. Two Arm Press 3 x 8 @ 125 lbs. = 3000 lbs.
2. Two Arm Curl 3 x 10 @ 65 lbs. = 1950 lbs.
3. KB Floor Press 3 x 10 @ 2 x 72 lbs. = 3456 lbs.
4. Lateral Raise 3 x 10 @ 2 x 12 lbs. = 720 lbs.
5. Bent Rowing 3 x 10 @ 125 lbs. = 3750 lbs.
6. Squat 3 x 10 @ 125 lbs. = 3750 lbs.
7. Stiff Legged Dead Lift 3 x 10 @ 125 lbs. = 3750 lbs.
8. Calf Raise 3 x 30 @ 125 lbs. = 11250 lbs.

Elapsed Time: 57:45
Volume: 31,626 lbs.

...for comparison, my last heavy day of the previous cycle I did 29,790 lbs. so I added a ton over three weeks to my peak. Slow and steady.

2009.12.09PM; jiujitsu...Wednesday night teacher bailed, so per the students requests, I taught a takedown class.

I showed them how to pull guard the right way as a warm up; since I wasn't expecting to teach I needed time to cogitate. I wanted to go right into some decent wrestling, but these guys need fundamentals, so we spent the first half an hour working on the 1-2-3-4 of shooting a double. Most of these guys do not have any wrestling experience and they need to have the basic movements drilled into them before you can do anything really exciting. Anyway, they did line drills on the shot, then paired practice, then drilled it with minor resistance. This was the first half an hour.

Second half we talked about ways to finish when the guy sees your shoot and sprawls or withdraws a leg. We covered switching to a low single, a knee tap, and switching to my head outside single Wigan-style finishing series: running the pipe, the trip, the re-double, and the drop single.

They liked it, so we closed by showing them how the same switches and finishes which we started of the shoot for a double could also be entered into off a two on one, or a headlock, or an armdrag. After class I smashed a couple blue belts for another hour and then split.

Aloha!

PS Supposed to do a light workout tonight, but after two hours of jiujitsu I ain't feeling it.

EDIT: In fact I tried it and it wasn't happening...I did the presses and the first set of curls and my joints were aching so fuck it. I will try to do the last workout of this cycle on Friday and then take my scheduled week off.
