Post your training journals here if you like. I'll make back-ups to avoid losing your data.

Week ending May 13

Weight: 205 (no change)
Miles walked: 25
Miles run: 4.4
Elevation gained: 2075

Average calories/day: 2700

Big week: 30 miles. Even ran a route (mainly because a friend asked about my workout. I told him about the route I like to walk, a 4.4 mile trail that rises 500 feet. The guy said, "I remember when you used to run that." 20 years ago. But I thought I'd try. It was a slow, plodding run but much easier than I'd expected. I'm a little psyched about that.)

Weight stays the same. 2700 calories is too much if I want to lose a few more pounds. And I do.

Next week's battle plan: Stay under 2000 cals/day.
20 miles of walking and some speed work.

Whoa! Today's workout brings my yearly miles to 503, about 6 weeks ahead on 1,000 mile/year goal.

Week ending May 20

Weight: 206 (gained a pound)

Miles walked: 26
Elevation gained: 541

Did more speed work this week. Laid off the altitude.

Calories/day: 2430

Clearly I need to keep it under 2,000 cals/day. Been trying that for the last two weeks and haven't made it. I'll make for the next ten days, so I can weigh in under 206 on May 31.

Since I am having trouble with one aspect of my plan, that is, keeping my daily calories under 2,000,
I am going to post daily calories here just for the next week.
May 21: 1095 (to get a low cal day under my belt. So to speak).
May 22: 1680
May 23: 2155
May 24: 1790
May 25: 1670
May 26: 2520
May 27: 2150

In clients who send food journals to me,.. they average 1/2 inch per week lost off their waist.
To the ones who can't be bothered,.. they stay fat. Fuck them.

that's been pretty much my experience. When I did the journal two years ago, I lost 25 pounds. Didn't do it last year and lost 5. Am doing it this year and am down 14 pounds so far.

It's clear in my log: even on weeks I put in ten hours and 35 miles, I gain weight if I let the calories drift up.

I'm still dealing with the novelty of recording my training workouts. Calories consumed will be tracked starting when I turn 55 in about a month. Thanks for the great example.

Week ending May 27:
weight 208.5
(I think a lot of this is bloat. I was at 205, then quit the BP meds, which were partly a diuretic)
I stayed pretty much on my food plan, averaging
1846 calories/day
walked 24 miles, 800 feet elevation, lots of speed work

Did you have a car accident?

Good job on the walking.

Thanks. No car accident. Broke the toilet with my face. You can find the story here:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=221415&hilit=how+I+broke+the+toilet

It is now June 20. I haven't been journaling my food nor walking very much. 40 miles this month.

So I guess I took three weeks off. OK, starting back into it today.

Bad deal, although I did chuckle a bit.

Get back to logging, also.

Month ending July 14:
weight 205

Walking miles, June 10 - July 14 = 88 miles.

641 miles this year. 102 miles ahead of my 1000 mile/year goal.

I haven't been journaling my food for a month. Haven't lost any weight but haven't gained any either.

I expect to walk about 150 miles on my upcoming Africa trip. It would be tough to journal my food. But I expect to come back right at 200 lbs. Maybe less.

July 14 - Aug. 21 = 192.4 miles walked.

150.7 of those miles were my Africa trip. Rocky, hot trek through the Suguta Valley, the Valley of Black Death so called because it is over 100 degrees every day, water is hard to find and the valley floor is a lava flow. Black lava, blazing hot. I'm a little proud of myself on that one.

Weight Aug. 21 = 202. 19 pounds lost for the year.

I only lost 2 pounds but went down two inches in the waist. Had to buy new pants, the second time this year.

833.5 miles walked for the year. I pretty much have my 1000 mile goal in sight. I'm probably going to try for 1250.

Yow! I dropped under 200 pounds today. 199.5. This is my first time under 200 in 30 years. 'Course it was after my workout today and it was hot and I was probably pretty dehydrated. But still...

I'm a stud!

Week ending Sept. 9:
Last week was my annual deep feeding festival. A friend of mine, a well known food historian, comes up from LA and cooks historic meals he has researched recently. We had 5 dinner parties in 6 nights, featuring, oh, a 17th Century Ottoman dinner, and 15th Century Italian dinner, etc.

Gained 5 pounds: 204 today. Will diligently get rid of that in the next few weeks.

There was a lot of kitchen work which limited my workout time. I walked 16.7 miles. Not much.

550 feet of elevation gained.

Back to work.

I envy you that experience.

I thought you'd like this : In "The Green Ripper", John MacDonald talks about "The Travis McGee Fitness Program For Earnest Office Workers". He says, essentially, that if you can't walk for 2 hours and cover about 6 miles without getting tired or winded, you have no business pursuing more strenuous programs. You're a smart cookie to be doing the essential basics, rather than trying to pretend you're a Navy Seal or something.

Congradulations, keep up the hard work and you will be at 220+ in no time. On a serious note though I would guess the extra weight will drop off as fast as it went on. After my last meet I ate like shit for a week and my bodyweight ballooned up about 8 pounds. A week of eating normal and it was down 8 pounds.

Thanks for the thot, DMW.
ABW, yeah, I'm not risking a lot of injury, but I walk a hell of lot harder than that. Trails, altitude, speed.

Oct. 8: For the month from Sept. 9

133.1 miles walked
8785 feet of altitude gained

Weight 204

I'm leaving for the trek to Everest Base Camp thursday. I did 9 miles in the snow yesterday, rising 2500 feet. This is the last training hike.

So my training for this looks good, I think:
Year to date miles walked: 1014
Year to date feet of altitude gained: 50,655
Weight lost: 17 pounds

I exceeded my mileage goal by 264 miles
I exceeded my altitude goal by 20,655 feet
I exceeded my weight goal by 9 pounds. (I wanted to weigh 195)

I think I'm ready for the EBC trek.

OK, back from the Everest Base Camp trip. Was sick for a week when I got back, but here's the score from Oct. 9 to Oct. 16.
Miles walked: 131.65
Altitude gained: 26,299 feet
Weight: 199

Exceeded my yearly goal of 1000 miles. Am at: 1142.7 miles today. I think I'll go for 1250 miles. While I think about a new goal. I need some event thing, like Everest Base Camp...

Nov. 16 - Dec. 31

Miles walked for the year: 1251.5 miles. My goal was 1250. I'm happy about that. About 500 more miles than my best year in the last 10.

After the Everest Base Camp Walk, in November, I "rested." Walked 35 miles in November (nothing for me --- a little over a mile a day). Went from 199 lbs to 214 in 6 weeks. Put in 90 miles in December to meet the goal, but didn't log my food. Those 90 miles in the cold didn't do much to take the weight off.

Moral: You can't rest. If you have a tendency to put on weight, as I do, you must be ever vigilant.

I hate it that I have to log my food. But I have to.

Next year: 800 miles walking

Some strength and flexibility work: for now it's YRG, or, as they call it now DDPYoga.

Goal weight: 194.
