So Nova Scotia is a hot bed of Gracie Barra? LOL. Very cool. Always a pleasure to read your log.

No I don't think so; his game was very oriented towards Barra style techniques but they are the most common in jiujitsu now days.

2011.04.12PM; bodybuilding...I really needed a break from the grind I've been doing (25/40) so I did some high reps and low weight for a change of pace.

1. Press Behind the Neck 2 x 12 @ 75 lbs.
2. Bent Row 3 x 15 @ 75 lbs.
3. Ring Pushups 3 x 12 @ 75 lbs.
4. Curls 1 x 10 @ 75 lbs.
5. Squats 2 x 15 @ 75 lbs.
6. Pullovers 2 x 20 @ 10 lbs.
7. Stiff Leg Deadlift 1 x 15 @ 75 lbs.
8. Leg Raise 1 x 15

Aloha!

2011.04.13PM; jiujitsu...rolled with a very strong Hawaiian blue belt for five or six rounds to start things off then taught two classes.

For the beginner's class I taught the basic stand up concepts. First is awareness, monitoring the environment and human behavior. How to control the distance, how to line up multiple opponents, how to enter safely into a clinch, then simple takedowns: trip, hip toss, etc.

For the more advanced guys I started off with a question and answer period: the main question was how to deal with a guy who stands up in your closed guard; I showed an omoplata sweep and that started another 45 minutes of working on omoplata series. After that I showed a series straight out of Sir Thomas Parkyns' The Inn Play or Cornish-Hugg Wrestler (1727) first attacking series: from a single wrist control to the flying horse, and then either the flying mare, or the knee tilt (pg. 45). All are throws intended to land your opponent hard and without a way to brace himself from the impact or your bodyweight.

Another interesting thing about these throws is the way they are set up; you will never get a big turning throw on a decent wrestler who will change levels and drop his hips. To mitigate for this, the first throw is a show--his natural reaction as a competent grappler sets him up for the big toss. If it weren't for the way the throws flow together, they wouldn't work, but instead they actually feed the opponent the chance to set himself up. Very crafty.

2011.04.18PM; jiujitsu...assisted with a class on attacks from mount, then sparred with big Andy for a 25 minute death match. I wasn't at my best and let him get away from me a couple of times back to a standing position, and twice botched big throws. First was a flying mare, second was a tai-otoshi, and had to fight my way out of his huge top position. Anyway, I did so and crushed his resistance when I mounted him and hit the cross lapel choke; he exploded and rolled me over so I finished with the Helio Gracie classic: cross lapel choke from closed guard.

At any rate, it has become obvious to me that I have ridden on my past training and experience for long enough and I need to buckle down and push myself to achieve the next level now that my schedule is opening up. I have been placing too much focus on lifting and need to reorient myself towards jiujitsu as time allows.

2011.04.20PM; jiujitsu...taught a beginner class to white and blue belts on closed guard attack series: armbar > omoplata > triangle for the first half an hour, then the second half an hour standing with osoto-gari > ouchi-gari > kosoto-gari.

After that I rolled with big Andy and basically felt like he threw me around, although I won both matches. First time I couldn't take him down, but eventually he pulled guard, swept me over, mounted me for like three minutes, blah blah blah until finally I rolled him over and took it with an americana. Second match I tried several things off a Russian but no-go, my timing is shit after so little training for so long, so he countered and absolutely speared the shit out of me. I landed hard but reversed him, took knee on belly, and choked him until he died. He and I never start from the knees, but he is becoming a bear to take down with the gi on; he has long arms and I struggle getting inside.

2011.04.21PM; jiujitsu...just rolled intervals with three other solid players (two purples and a blue) , two or three in, one out for three minute periods. I was not very impressive, but there you have it. Probably just under an hour. Aloha!

2011.04.25PM; jiujitsu...did intervals with my big viking blue belt and another big older gentleman, a brown belt. We did two three minute rounds in, one three minute round out, perhaps four times through. After that I rolled with a white belt for a while because he was sitting there looking forlorn, and then I split.

2011.04.27PM; jiujitsu...first hour was on the Sao Paulo pass as an alternative way to break the closed guard.

After, I rolled with a pipsqueak little blue belt, one of those little guys who acts as if he is doing you a favor to roll with you and give up so much weight. As if it is my fault that he is dystrophic? Anyway, despite the fact that I am the higher belt and can compel him to, he condescended to warm me up for a while, and I was suitably gentlemanly. After twisting him in knots for a spell he politely declined further contest.

After him I engaged the services of a purple belt from Connecticut via Hilo (Fabiano Teles' academia, my ninjas whisper to me) who is trying to join our ranks, and I gave him a warm welcome which will hopefully imbue in him pride we all take in the Relson Gracie name.

Aloha!

Indeed, to offer the Pilgrim less than a warm welcome would be a disservice, lest he leave that night thinking the Academy had little to offer.
