2011.03.19AM; jiujitsu...rolled with a big 240 lbs. blue and then a scrappy purple, both no-gi. I didn't have it in me to play creatively so I just stuck to my most basic pressure game. Rolled in total for about an hour.

Afternoon I did the following strength workout (day 17). I did the swings first actually, to relax my back after wrestling.

1. Deadlifts 2 x 5 @ 190 lbs.
2. Press 2 x 5 @ 100 lbs.
3. Curl 2 x 5 @ 70 lbs.
4. 1H KB Swing 1 x 20/20 @ 36 lbs.
5. L-Sit 1 x 5

Thanks Alex, I liked what you sent me. You should post it in the nuggets section, or if you prefer, I could.

if you want to post it,great.

problem is that i never tried it. the exercises are great but idk about sets and reps.
it seems a spin on GVT.
i found the program on the UG forum years ago, so buyers beware.

when you have the time:
what advantage do you have with the weight training you currently are doing?
especialy from deadlift and swing and why did you choose those exercises?
it seems a spin off of dan john's workout.

thanks

I've done the Don Blue 10 x 10 workout with good carryover to my grappling.

Re: this current program; this is my version of the Easy Strength program Dan John posted about. It's alright, but I started out doing it with dips and chins, but my shoulder started to hurt so I changed to press and curl. It's too early to judge this though, but I chose it because I wanted to do some lower rep work.

2011.03.21PM; jiujitsu...rolled against a solid blue from Hanalei for a while and then practiced a Cornish wrestling throw for kicks, the Back Crook (kliked adrenv in the old tongue, apparently).

The back crook is like this: left hand grips his belt in front, you grapevine his left leg with your right and then throw you right hand over his back for as deep a grip as you can. He can't run behind you to your right because his left leg is entwined with your right leg. Then you take a hop on your free left foot 90-degrees clockwise and load his weight off his feet onto your left, twist and dump him on his back to your 5 o'clock direction. There's a similar throw in SAMBO and it's famously injurious because you dump your combined weight on his ribs in a totally indefensible direction, i.e. you cannot break-fall.

I haven't hit it live yet, when I would go for it the guy would turn away as I would go for the grip over the back, in which case it was easier to just grip a bodylock and up-end him. Fun to try though. I'm into these old European throws right now and some of them are pretty rough stuff.

2011.03.23; strength training (Day 18). It was dark and raining so I did leg thrusts for my abs. All movements were done with meticulous form except the last single on the curls, which was ugly.

1. Deadlifts 1 x 6 @ [135>205>255>275>285>290]
2. Press 1 x 6 @ [95>115>125>135>145>155]
3. Curls @ [80>95>105>115>115>120]
4. 1H KB Swing 1 x 25/25 @ 36 lbs.
5. Leg Thrust 1 x 5

Mak,

I don;t know if it's that Fatherhood has been good to you or if it's the path you're on with JJ but there is undeniable wisdom in your practice. I admire that.

Now look, I've used my up all my sincerity for 2011.

2011.03.27AM; running...ran four miles up a mountain and then walked down. Running like this once, and at maximum twice, a week is definitely a solid way to create a base of cardiovascular fitness. It's not quite steady state because the incline varies, although never disappears, but definitely builds wind.

2011.04.02AM; strength training (Day 21). Finished my comprehensive exam for my master's degree at 10:45, was working out by 11:00. It was far too beautiful a day to be doing presses inside, so I decided to see how my body would react to going back to dips and chins. Dips felt fine, chins a little less so.

1. Deadlifts 2 x 5 @ 225 lbs.
2. Ring Dips 2 x 5 @ bodyweight
3. Ring Chins 2 x 5 @ bodyweight
4. 1H KB Swing 1 x 30/30 @ 36 lbs.
5. L-Sit 1 x 5

2011.04.04PM; jiujitsu...schedule is opening up so it's back the front for me.

Took a class on grip fighting to finish the choke when you have taken the back and he is resisting strongly. Finished up rolling for half an hour with a blue belt and then bouncing out. I felt very stiff so I purposely left before I was tired.

2011.04.11PM; jiujitsu...participated in a group class on attacks from top side, which I like a lot.

After that rolled with a very big, quite talented blue belt from Nova Scotia visiting on vacation. He had a very good guard, immediately after we shook hands he gripped me, pulled a big sweep and then took my back, then mounted me haha. But it's cool, I got out and then I pretty much asserted myself from there and took him four nill. The one time he tried to stand I doubled him nicely. But he was really good and it's always a kick to play with visitors. He had a very new school Barra-esque underhooking type of game and once I caught on I knew the formula.
