BTW, his customer service was memorably superb.

Thanks, Mak!

2011.09.30; jiujitsu...had only a couple of students tonight; there was a block party up da road and I think it thinned the herd. But I had a couple of game guys and just rolled with them for about an hour and twenty.

My moves for the night were the triangle from guard and one that's finally becoming huge for me after a long hiatus: the rear naked choke. When I first began jiujitsu, this was one of just a handful of finishes that I knew, and it was a big deal--the only real choke from the back that I would go for. I've come full circle to the line of thinking that in reality, it is the only real choke from the back, and my attention is better spent learning various refinements and setups to it, as opposed to completely different chokes.

The tweaks that I was working on tonight are trapping one or both of the defending arms with my leg(s) BJ Penn style, and learning when one arm under the chin isn't going to effect the finish to use it to thread the other arm through, something I've picked up from observing Rickson in action. It's the smoothest way I know to get past a chucklehead who just want to tuck his chin and pray.

Aloha!

2011.10.03PM; jiujitsu...taught a class on back attacks, counters, and re-counters. Too many techniques to bother explaining and I could see their little circuits were fried with too much information. Note to self: keep it simple, stupid. Afterwards rolled a bit, finished him with arm bar from guard and a back triangle.

Aloha!

PS My back is pretty unhappy these days and I expect my training will reflect it, one way or another.

2011.10.05PM; jiujitsu...taught a class on guard retention, kept it simple with how to turtle when the guy passes, and from there how to sit through or roll back to guard. Basic stuff.

Then I taught the shinhook so-called "quarter guard" and the centerline theory as two additional, more advanced concepts. Then just had them roll light, rotating partners for a half an hour, with the emphasis on adventurous guardplay so that they could practice their guard retention when they screwed up got passed.

My one female student was rolling back to guard and throwing up triangles very smoothly, she has some potential.

2011.10.10PM; jiujitsu...worked on an attacking combination from closed guard and then rolled for an hour, working on my open guard and back attacks. Even hit a berimbolo in rolling, but shredded both sleeves of my black Howard kimono. Kimono recommendations anyone?

Mizuno make the best kimono's, the Yawara or Super Best are good but pricey. I have given up on BJJ kimono's now.

Mizuno Yawara is out of my league I'm afraid. I can get 5 Fuji kimonos for that price...but damn they look nice.

2011.10.12; jiujitsu...taught the same class as Monday; I am actually considering the format of only teaching a single class per week and forcing people to revisit the same techniques several times...and probably a maximum of three techniques per class. Time will tell if I continue. Anyway, this time I did, and taught the same series as Monday, attacks from the closed guard. After 45 minute class I had us roll for an hour straight, switching up partners half way through. Me, I was going after triangles from everywhere, that's my new shit.

IMO, a single class per week is very beneficial. At my Academy, Eric often teaches this way, developing & deepening the technique.

FC, how do you see the Triangle for street applications? Or is it more a sport technique?

Triangle is a sport technique, as done from the bottom. A rear triangle (like BJ Penn did to Hughes) might be useful in rare occasions where you start to lose the back mount. But no, in the street, someone triangles you just spike them on their head.

Makes sense.
Your other submission focus, the RNC/Mata Leao, looks good for both sport & street.

Thanks.

In the "Gracie Breakdown",.. they constantly show that underhooking a leg prevents the slam,.. so isn't this viable in the street?

And to contradict myself, Bas Rutten said his neck injuries [recent surgery] were a result of Darrel Gholar spiking him on his head in a training session. So if can happen to Bas,.....
