Went to the driving range this morning with a mate. They sell an unlimited ball pass for ten quid for the day. Spent about 3 hours there, and hit about 300 balls each.

Came home, and felt pretty drained. Took 7 caffeine pills, totalling about 350mg of caffeine. That perked me up a little. Headed straight out to the gym.

Incline bench:
80kg: 5,5,5,5

Deadlift:
60kg, 100kg, 140kg, 190kg, 210kg x 1
190kg x 1,1,1,1,1,1

Dumbbell push press:
Right arm: 40kg: 3,3,3,3,7
Left arm: 40kg: 1,1,1,1,1

Cheat curls:
60kg, 65kg, 70kg x 3
60kg x 3,3,3

At the beginning of this log one of my aims was to take a week off from the gym in order to prevent myself using it as an excuse not to deal with my problems. That's exactly what I've been doing. It's time to take a week off. Focus on my exams, and remaining coursework. Once exams are over, meet some new girls, and finally get over the old one. I let her problems form some sort of control over me, and she still has that effect. I need to get rid of that.

I'll spend this week focusing on exams, clearing my mind, internalizing the lessons of the last few months, and preparing to start over.

Read this article this morning:

http://www.theironsamurai.com/2011/07/1 ... -is-a-lie/

It scared me how much I identified with it. I need to fix this shit, and I need to do it ASAP.

Decent article. I've dealt with depression for years and the whole "fake it until you make it" is spot on. It always helps to talk to someone. But it's got to be someone who understands or will at least shut the fuck up and pretend to understand.

YUP.

Tried everything. Failing the talk it out, what works best is a good night's sleep and a PR.

Thanks boys. I have a hell of a lot of thinking to do, about a hell of a lot of things.

Given all that's been going on in my life, and the things that are to come, it seems like one of those times that your whole life direction needs a radical overhaul.

There were two parts of the article that I identified with. The emptiness and the purpose. Without a specifically defined short term purpose, my life feels very empty, even though I'm surrounded by people I love, and who love me. The other thing I noticed was the mention of nihilism. I've never really thought about it, but that's something I've always struggled with. I find it very difficult to care about anything.

I need a new list of goals. Both in the gym and out the gym. And my thought patterns need to change.

But it can all wait until after exams.

Excellent article. And yeah, sleep is key.
Now do something fun everyday during your break from the gym!

This is a good article. For me, realising the need to break the cyclical nature of my depressive thought patterns was key, even fundamental to getting better. And so far it works. It also seems to be positively reinforcing in other ways too, in that the longer you go "bad thought" free, the less frequently they come back, and when they do the easier it is to break them. Hope you get results from whatever you do.....

For me it's recognizing when a thought is about to become a fixation and nipping it in the bud. In my case this is based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) principles that I've self-taught, and it appears to have been successful so far. The practice of being on the look-out for this stuff tends to take care of it TBH. If you're interested, I'd read as much as you can on CBT methods for coping with/treating depression.....

Thanks YID. I'll do some reading around the net, and I've ordered Lifting Depression by Kelly Lambert. I don't think I've ever had full depression, but I think there are aspects of my life that the article deeply resonated with, and that perhaps the book could help me with.

Today: (sets x reps)

Push press: 80kg: 10x3

Bent over rows: 100kg x 4,4... 110kg x 4,4... 120kg x 4,4... 130kg x 4

Shrugs (behind back): 140kg: 10,10,10,10

Hammer rope curls: 10,10,10,10

Getting my swole on for the summer. Did the rows holding the bar elevated the entire time.

I need a more hypertrophy/strength based program for a bit, instead of a strength/strength/burnout/hypertrophy program. I'm thinking about DeFranco's WSFSB.

Anyway, last exam tomorrow. They've all gone surprisingly well so far. Better than I thought they would. I'm sort of dreading them ending tomorrow. As shit as exam period is, it gives me something to focus on. I'm not looking forward to losing that focus.

Taking a more strength/hypertrophy based approach now. Using inspiration from DeFranco's Built like a Badass, but really my own programming. Just having fun.

Push Press: 60kg,70kg,80kg,90kg,100kg x 1

90kg x 4

Deadlift: 60kg,100kg,140kg x 3

170kg x 5

Shrugs: 170kg: 3x10

Smith machine shoulder press: 25kg per side: 20 reps in a bunch of sets. I'll just throw some extra weight on each side next time and go for 20 reps in a bunch of sets again.

Hammer rope curls: 3x10

Had a fucking terrible morning in terms of my head. Things in general have been getting better, but I guess with exams finished and time to myself to think, everything sort of crashed in on itself, and I spent the morning deeply deeply depressed. I really hope that's the worst of it, and I'll be able to move on now, because I don't know how many more mornings or days like that I can stomach. I think this morning was the worst my head has got so far, so hopefully that means it's the apex or whatever.

I like it too. My own ADD won't let me progress on things like bodybuilding movements, bodyweight stuff, and fluff. Hammer curls and smith machine presses nearly killed me from boredom today.

Today:

Deadlift: 150kg: 50 reps in half an hour. All triples and a couple of singles.

Some heavy tricep rope pushdowns and rope curls for triples. Most or all of the weight stack.

Today:

BNPP: Up to 100kg

Push press: 70kg, 80kg, 90kg, 100kg x 1

Failed 110kg 4 or 5 times

Box Squats: (Westside ''sitting back'' style, an inch above parrallel. Knee was hurting)

Triples up to 140kg. Doubles up to 160kg. Then asked a guy for a spot, and went for 170kg. Got an easy first rep, second was a slight struggle, but then lost my balance somehow as I was walking forwards to rack it, sat back down, and fell backwards, dumping 170kg onto my spotter, which he caught, mixed grip, and then lowered to the ground. Not sure why or how I lost my balance, but luckily the guy see's me lift usually and likes me, so he was pretty cool about me dumping 170kg onto him.

Fuck everything.

Very quick workout. In and out in under twenty minutes. Bodyweight: 86kg. RPE of about 7 on everything.

Push Press: 90kg: 10 singles

Deadlift: 170kg: 10 singles

I think I'm getting pretty jacked. Some huge Israeli dude who came to eat at the restaurant I work in last night offered me a job as a debt collector. Told me he'd make a man out of me.

How tall are you?You can tell me in real numbers (metric) as I understand that better than the strange feet and inches thing the gringos use.
