2014.05.05PM; Jiu-Jitsu...made it an early night so I could go home and bring my son mochi on Boy's Day.

I rolled with a very good purple belt and a pretty poor blue belt, just pulling guard and seeing what I could make of it. I out-sized both of them so if I got the top position I quickly reset to bottom. Also, walked to and from the academy.

2014.05.06PM; Jiu-Jitsu...went to a new academy in our association, Kahala Jiu-Jitsu and gave a seminar on self defense. All of the students are relative newcomers to the art and needed very basic level techniques, but I enjoyed teaching and they were attentive students.

2014.05.07PM; Jiu-Jitsu...walked to the gym as an extended warm up, my hips were aching after letting women toss me around yesterday with really shitty throws. Teaching self defense is hard on the body, I will say that much.

I didn't have much time to train, so I just grabbed a big brown belt and went to work rolling. He's big, young, conditioned, and plays a very modern guard-based game so he's an excellent measuring stick for me. I put him on his butt, passed to side, but then made a miscalculation by stacking him up. He replaced guard and closed me in a reverse triangle, but I saw it as it happened and changed the angle so he couldn't cinch it up. Unfortunately, as I was extricating myself, my busted up nose opened up like a faucet. Remember getting kicked in the face twice last week Tuesday? Well, the pressure of the triangle opened up whatever internal damage there was, so I had to stop and get cleaned up.

We went back at it this time, I passed again, more carefully this time. He tried to hold me in half but I dropped my inside knee over his leg and came to a 3/4-mount with my foot still trapped, then extricated the foot while I threatened the choke. He defended strongly, but I was just sinking in the second grip of a collar choke when the next class started and we had to call it.

I had to split early, so I dipped out and walked back to my car.

Aloha!

2014.05.11AM; my son and I went to the farmer's market and then cooked pancakes for mama. After that, I did the following workout:

1. Bench Press 2 x 5, 4 x 4 (135, 155, 195 x 4 x 4)
2. DB Bench Press 3 x 10 (40s, 50s, 60s)

Do you have the patience to wait
till your mud settles and the water is clear?
Can you remain unmoving
till the right action arises by itself?

-Daodejing, Chapter 15

2014.05-13PM; Jiu-Jitsu...walked from my office to the academy down in Chinatown along the waterfront. Started out sparring with the academy owner and my old associate Drake the Snake. We had some good moments but he has not been training much due to a sore back and he rapidly needed to take a break. Happily, class was starting up at the time so I switched to that.

It was a weird mix: three black belts, two brown belts, two blue belts, and two white belts. What are you going to do? So we warmed up with basic self defense techniques, then spent the second half on more advanced double-underhook guard passing and defeating inversions. A bit of a grab bag, but necessary given the wild disparity in abilities.

After class we sparred eight minute rounds: I subbed my black belt opponent five times from guard in the first round, which felt nice. Second round was with the white belt who gave me a lecture a few months back on how to spar. This was the first time I sparred with him since that happened. I told him that I hadn't forgotten our conversation and that I would train with him in the way he wished. His reply was interesting, he said, "I'm probably not as much of a pussy as I was then." I think it was his way of admitting some culpability, but I told him that at least he had spoken to me from his heart, and that if nothing else, that took courage. Anyway, we had a good round of sparring and at the end I could see that he felt more comfortable working with me than he had before. It was a good feeling to make something right.

I think back on how it had irritated me when it happened, and why I chose not to say or do anything to address the situation. My emotions usually drive me to confront situations, but often as I get older I realize that there are many things that it's best not to try to control the outcome, to just let take their natural course. This seemed like one of those times. I just backed off the guy and let him grow over time.

2014.05.14PM; Jiu-Jitsu...walked to the academy from my office for my warm up. It's about 1.5 miles each way, but after a day sitting in front of a computer and in meetings it is an ideal and relaxing way to warm up.

Spent the next half an hour sparring with an excellent brown belt. I passed his guard and mounted him immediately, but spent the next 5 minutes in mount trying to see my way through to a collar choke. I finally sank the choke, but he went for a Hail Mary escape and pushed me back into his guard. So, I passed him again. He had burned a ton of energy trying to escape my mount, so this time I put on the pressure from side control, and that is where we were when it was time to start class.

Spent the next hour drilling passes and then bounced to go pick up my son.

2014.05.20PM; my family is leaving on June 1 for two months in Europe, so I will be spending a little less time at the academy than I normally would until then. As far as lifting, I have been rudderless for a while, so I figure, what the hell I will give the Faleev, 10-week, three-day-a-week program a shot. I just need to do something that is focused, basic, and progressive while managing fatigue. It will be:

THREE DAY
Monday – off
Tuesday – (A) heavy SQ
Wednesday – off
Thursday – (B) heavy BP, light SQ
Friday – off
Saturday – (C) heavy DL, light BP
Sunday – off

No other exercises, jiu-jitsu as normal after June 1. Anyway, here is Week 1, Day A:

1. Squats
135 x 5
185 x 5
235 x 5
235 x 5
235 x 5
235 x 5
235 x 5

Finished with hard stretching for lower body: quads, hams, lower back, groin, calves, etc.

Aloha!

2014.05.21PM; Jiu-Jitsu...walked to the academy, 1.5 miles. Rolled for half an hour with a sorta-kinda-decent blue belt, playing all from the bottom, then assisted with the beginner's class on bottom half guard. Walked back to my car and went to pick up my son.
