Didn't bother trying Kaspersky One. My antivirus has run out, and so I gave this a 30 day try. No clue how bad my computer may be compromised now, but I know it hasn't picked up anything close to even tracking cookies the way Avira or AVG has.

Slow as shit too. Slows down startup pretty bad too.

I use microsoft security essentials. And even with the sites I frequent, I still haven't had any problems. Which makes me think the virus engineers need to work harder.

Hmmm, noted. Does Microsoft Security Essentials pick off sites that could be security risks?

I think so, but I use Chrome for browsing, so maybe it was chrome that sent the red flag. I've been drinking, so my rememory ain't so good. I tend to ignore those warnings anyway, I like living on the edge.

FWIW:

MIT recommends and provides McAffee's VirusScan to staff and students as the recommended tool here. Simple, kept up to date, and doesn't bog your shit down with a bunch of background stuff. When used in combination with appropriate settings for whatever browser I've been using (I've switched between Firefox, Chrome and Safari, and IE when using my Parallels drive for windows-based software), it's been sufficient for me for the last three years.

I used Norton Internet Security and CA before, but both are such memory hogs it was just ridiculous. With all the calculation-intensive software for school, this would have been a non-starter.

Kaspersky is a lot heavier than Norton so far from what I can tell.

I'll have to check out McAfee. I'm a Firefox user when it's stable. Otherwise I use Opera. I'm very anti Chrome.

I use Chrome all the time but have been thinking of trying Opera. I downloaded it but haven't used it yet.

I like Opera quite a bit.

Chrome is one of those things that makes me a little uneasy. I know quite a few people who think Google collects even more information from Chrome users.

I rely on the internet for work, and would prefer I not give up any more than what I know they're already getting.

Opera though... it's fast, it's stable. It's like Firefox, but it doesn't get all shaky on each build that they release. If they only had more plugins and add ons it would be the best. Well, it probably is the best, and all those things not being available probably is what makes it so stable. Anything in place of IE though.
