I put one piece of scrap wood at the bottom of the hole in front of the boards and another behind the boards toward the top of the hole. That's enough to keep it from moving much in the ground.

Edit: This link has a pic that illustrates what I do with the boards in the ground, but I don't use a single, tapered board like they do. I use a maple 1x6 with two shorter boards behind it. link

For a pad, I buy one of those foam boards they sell for chicks to kneel on while they're gardening or scrubbing the floor, and cut it to fit. As far as I can tell, they're exactly the same density and thickness as makiwara pads you'd order for more $.

Last couple of days were busy, so I missed some jujitsu and lifting.

Today, jujitsu 12-2:15. Throws, throws and more throws. Class wrapped up with a little work on elbow blocks.

Back in the early seventies my friend made one with a wooden backing, naugahyde cover and filled with pennies. We were immensely stupid. Lucky I don't have arthritis.

Some things you need to work up to. There's a story about Itosu, the teacher of Funakoshi and others, outgrowing regular makiwara and punching the stones out of a wall.

I took a couple days off last week to get out of town with my wife. She came down with some kind of stomach bug that I got shortly after we got back in town. I was first able to keep down solid food (a banana) Saturday night, but I'm still not 100%.

More 50/20.
DB MP: 17x3x35.
Pull-ups: 5x3x(bw+10), 6x3x(bw+5), 6x2x(bw+5). Starting at 10 lbs was too ambitious and took a lot out of me.

Pull-ups: 3x17x(bw+5).
3x10 TKEs per side with purple JS band.

Saturday, 12-2, jujitsu. We worked on lapel grabs, using a lot of nikyu and a little dai nikyu.

Sunday I did nothing.

Today, warmed up with 10 minutes on the makiwara.

I didn't get much sleep at the end of last week so I laid of the 50/20 for a few days.

Thursday, Jujitsu, 7:30-9:30. Lots of throwing. Darth started us out throwing each other in ladders (1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 1-1, etc.) and we continued that for most of the class. Toward the end we switched to mugging and weapons defense. We finished up with defending against wrist grabs.

Saturday, jujitsu, 12:00-2:00. We worked on hane goshi and a couple of other throws. Hane goshi is a tricky throw, but the couple of times I did get the timing, footwork, etc. it felt like the guy threw himself over my hip.

Today, warmed up by walking my dogs and mowing the yard.
DL: 20x3x155 in just under 20 minutes.
Rear delt flies and TKES with JS bands.

My allergies have been acting up so I've taken it a little easy.

Tonight, Jujitsu, 7:30-9:30. The other white belts and I spent the class going through test material.
