Re: Books for Boys of all ages!

I will confess to enjoying, as a youth, the works of S.E. Hinton - The Outsiders , Rumble Fish , like that. The movies were pretty good, too. As I got a little older, I somehow discovered the books of gun-mag writer Jerry Ahern - most notably, The Survivalist . Some of the pulpiest stuff I've ever r...

Machete ...

Apparently, it's really being made. Some surprising casting, too.

Re: Gran Torino -- Clint Eastwood

Shit Kurt, he's already made that ending you wanted to see like a HUNDRED times before. Clint wanted to do something different in this movie and I applaud him for it. It's not so much about the ending I WANTED to see; it's about the ending they led me to believe I was GOING to see. I'm just saying ...

I wait the entire fucking movie to see some old-school Clint-type awesomeness ... that never fucking happens! I sat ther...

Re: Breaking Bad

Agreed. This is a very good show, excellent all around. It can be pretty funny, too, but in a sometimes 'dark' sort of way.

I watched the first season on DVD, and I've been TiVoing the new season; haven't gotten back to it yet.

Re: Barry Eisler's Hard Rain

Eisler's stuff is decent - well researched, nice sense of place and character - but they are missing something that John D. MacDonald's "Travis McGee" series and Lee Child's "Reacher" novels have in abundance. I read "Hard Rain", and it was a fair read. But I'd reread ...

Re: Barry Eisler's Hard Rain

I've read all of the 'Rain' series, and they're excellent - fast-paced, technically accurate, etc. I would highly recommend them. Just one note: If you're going to give them a shot, you should really start with Rain Fall (which is actually the first book, not Hard Rain , which is, in fact, the secon...

The Expendables

Wow. Judging by the cast, this one is going to be ... interesting. It certainly has potential, on an epic scale.

Re: Sukiyaki Western Django

I don't know if it's true, but she told me that many of the Japanese actors learned their English lines phonetically, like Lugosi in "Dracula." I never heard that (though I likely wouldn't, as my interest in the movie pretty much ended when I started watching it), but I'd be inclined to b...

Re: Sukiyaki Western Django

I really wanted to like this movie, as the premise seemed sort of promising - but, oh, what a convoluted fucking disaster it turned out to be.

I did rather enjoy the antics of the sheriff, though.

Re: The Shield Series Finale

This show is killing me, and has been for weeks. I haven't been this wrapped up in a TV show - impatiently waiting for the next episode, strung along like a junkie - since I used to watch Alias and 24 . What's with all the Shane-hating? I like him, and I feel sort of bad for the dumb-ass; he makes s...

Re: Doomsday

Well, sadly enough, I rather enjoyed this film. Stupid though it may have been (and no one here is arguing that fact; it certainly wasn't Masterpiece Theater ), it entertained me for a couple hours - which is all I can really ask of a movie. As far as the various 'homages', I saw the following, at l...

Re: David Wellington Zombie Trilogy & Zombie Books Not Read Yet

Jack - I read 'Monster Island' and enjoyed it enough to buy the second book - which I've not yet read. (I've never been much of a zombie guy, so this may or may not be significant.) My first exposure to Wellington was his most recent novel, '13 Bullets', a vampire tale - which, again, I found readab...

"There's an option in the special features where you can stay with the character of choice during the firefight."

This was a real cool feature; I watched it tonight. There are actually a few added/altered scenes in here that weren't in the film. Well worth the viewing time.

"Did you read the part about Jailhouse Rock/52 Blocks, very interesting stuff." Haven't gotten to it yet, but soon. I did find the brief section on knife fighting interesting - though not being a 'blade master' myself, I can't speak to the accuracy of it. Seemed like sound advice to me ...

Fight - by Eugene S. Robinson

The full and brilliant title: Fight: Everything you ever wanted to know about ass-kicking but were afraid you'd get your ass kicked for asking . The author (my new hero) seems to hold in quite high regard the manly art and pleasure of a good scuffle. And what man, worthy of being labeled as such, do...
