I feel the need to mention again Dan Reeder, who gets a lifetime pass for this one:

Not exactly alt-country, but I give the album a B. Catchy, filthy, and surprising.

Terriers is now available to stream on Netflix. Yes, they cancelled it after one season. It was too beautiful to live.

Re: Box wine
I would just drink the whole box. You pussies can't hang. :partyman: As for the coolers, I was taught by a sommelier I worked with to mix cheap red wine and coke. He called it a guinea cooler. Delicious. (and maybe I should specify, coca cola not cocaine) I'll try that tonight, thanks. That's puke ...

It's a great game so far, but a potentially HUGE time-suck. Both times I started playing the game I wound up saying "holy shit! It's been three hours" and had to make myself turn it off.

With the polygraph episode, I think they're head-faking us on Saul's first results. If they make Saul a freaking terrorist I'm going to be pissed.

Homeland is very good, I caught up on demand last week and just remembered there was a new one last night. I'm interested to see how long they can go on the premise.

Re: Lansdale, Devil Red, exactly what you'd expect
I just recently reread all the Hap and Leonard novels. I was unexpectedly struck by the evolution of the characters and the storytelling...it goes from normal to gonzo, which, in Lansdale's case, isn't any kind of criticism. Savage Season was very much like The Bottoms. Classic Lansdale, small stor...

The Bottoms was very good. Hap and Leonard are not like that but you'll appreciate the author's style and facility with filthy dialogue and violence.Yogalete wrote:I've only read "The Bottoms", which was great. The others are on my never ending TBR list of books and authors.

Re: Game of Thrones, Dammit
Targeryen getting the molten gold dumped on his head is just a prelude for some excellent smack-down in the last 4 episodes of the season, if I remember the book correctly. The guy playing Tyrion Lannister is perfect. Arya is perfect. It is all great show. The *thunk* after Jackass Targeryen died w...

Re: The Wire
Probably one of the best if not the best TV series ever as a whole. If it's not the best in TV history, I'm open to hear what series would beat it. Deadwood is in the same ballpark, but didn't get an ending (those fuckers). The Shield had a great story arc but wasn't as thought-provoking. Breaking ...

Re: Dexter
It has some weak spots-- some of the characters have zero chemistry with each other-- but overall a definite watch. Yes, John Lithgow is a highlight. So is the character Doakes from the early episodes.

Scorcese's doc about Fran Lebowitz. I've read very little of her stuff, but this woman is hilarious, very smart, and fascinating. I watched it twice back to back. She'd be even more funny to someone from NYC.
It was on HBO On Demand in December, not sure if it's still there.

Netflixed it last night. It was interesting and definitely worth a view on streaming. Maynard's a creative guy who discovered a new passion relatively later in life.

Re: The Wire
Also Jezzy: In the scene you posted, it's amazing to realize both Stringer and McNulty are played by Brits who had to learn to speak like they were from Balmer.
So did Carcetti.
And I'd almost describe it as a series of five visual novels. Every season had an overarching story with a conclusion.

Was this your first time watching, Jezzy? I came late to the party, only watching well after it was out on DVD. I added the whole series to Netflix, then just bought the damn box set midway through watching the 2nd season. It was too good not to own and be able to rewatch. Every time I loan it out t...

Re: The Terriers on FX
I'm disappointed. I liked this show more than SoA this season. I'm bummed too. Don't know why the show didn't have a bigger audience, except the ads made it look like a show about dogs. I had a DVRed episode running late last night while I did last minute gift prep, and kept getting drawn in all ov...
