San Diego

I'm headed to California in a few weeks, spending one week in a beach house at Mission Beach. It's a family reunion type thing, so I will probably spend most of my time at the beach hanging out with my niece and nephews.
Any recommendations from those of you who know the area?

Just frickin' gorgeous. Get over to La Jolla if you can. Go to the cave. And, for a fantastic view where you can see the curve of the earth and the best fish tacos ever made by the hand of man, Georges at the Cove.

Albertos Mexican food, all day every day. I lived on it for about 15 years. Go to Coronado, see the hotel, see the SEALS. Go to Tijauna buy drugs and drink a lot. If you golf Tijauna Country Club is excellent. Catch a bull fight. Oh yeah, the zoo is great.

I enjoyed the zoo when I was there as a kid.

San Diego is full of fun - the normal tourist places are all worth the visit. If you have kids, take them on the City Bus tour and hop off when you feel like it. I picked up a pass for a few days to the Zoo (fantastic), Sea World, (so-so) and the Safari up north out of town (perhaps even better than the zoo). The ferry from Coronado, then a few hours on the Midway is a good way to spend part of your day. It was hard to find a bad restaurant in the area.

You can't go wrong if you just hang around Mission Bay and the advices so for could occupy your week swimmingly.

Since it's a family thing and there are probably several out of towners, you might want to check out:
>>Old Town: Kind of touristy but they try to give a feeling of what it was like in the old west times
>>Gas Lamp District: Full of restaurants and bars
>>Old Mission Churches: There are a few of them in the area and an important part of US history not well known to those of us from the east.

Learn to surf or at least boogie board, tan and chase little beach hotties. MB is where all the partying is.

The SD Zoo is World Class. Don't pass it up. If you can go to North County, the wild animal park is also excellent. La Jolla is awesome, too. If you go for a swim out in the cove don't think about the sewage being dumped into the ocean a few miles south. For food, you can't go wrong here:

Hodad's

I would probably destroy In-N-Out as well. Lots of good eats in SD. I love San Diego. Too bad it's in California.

Disregard this recommendation of In-N-Out. It sucks.

That is my only advice.

I'll be at a 3 day work seminar at the Hard Rock Hotel the second weekend of August.

Where are the good titty bars? And I remember a hookah bar when I was there a while back, but I was pretty fucked up already and can't remember where it is.

Anyone?

There's a number of Diner, Drive-in, and Dive places in the area. Right by the airport on India St is Blue Water Seafood, specializing in seafood tacos and salads. The food is great, and there's this young lass working there who has some awesome tattoos and is amazingly fit and purty. Like, amazingly. A must stop. just down the street half a block is El Indio maxican food. Try the shredded beef tacos.

You are all very good people. I'll have to head to that restaurant.

No TJ for me on this trip. I can't really take the risk of showing up with a tattoo on my face or a Mexican bride since this is professional in nature.

Go to la jolla shores beach with a mask and snorkel. There's an area just south of the boat launch in front of the hotel where hundreds of Leopard sharks congregate in very shallow water every July. I take people down there every year, it's one of my favorite things

Read as I dump all my dead hookers there.

Did this one today. It was great until the stingray got me. My nephew got nailed 30 seconds later. Totally worth it to swim with sharks.

If you ever find yourself near Encinitas in the morning, get breakfast at Honey's. Up the road from Swami's a bit, but worth the drive after a swim or playing in the surf.

Edit: Just checked the place on Yelp and the reviews are mixed. It's been seven years since I ate there, so maybe it's tanked a bit since I last hit the place. Nevermind.
