I played around with one when I was doing some work at Google when they came out - not sure what has happened to them since then. It was a nice, fast, basic computer. Samsung and Acer have done fairly decent units for years. If you are in a place where you are online all the time and have open access to everything in the cloud, they would be fine. If you are in a company that blocks some sites or are frequently offline (i.e. on airplanes), I think they would be rather inconvenient.

I like the idea but having my data available all the time and would pay the extra few hundred for a device that doesn't require packing around external hard drives and the like.

It's funny how Samsung basically copied the MAC Book Pro and put what looks like Linux on it. It uses a Linux-based OS, does it not?

Doh! Sorry, Tom. Saw this thread at the top o' the FS page and didn't realize you had already made the connection.

Personal opinion: For the price, this is a sweet deal. Mucho interest and don't see too many negatives (for what it is and what it can do). As an aside, I just got my Nexus straight from Google and couldn't be happier. Way cheaper than an iPhone and pure Android is amazing - so much better than iOS. I think Google is kicking all kinds of tail lately.

Chrome OS is Linux-based.

All laptops look the same nowadays.

AWESOME! Im going to buy one for my fiancée for Christmas then. She needs a nice new computer an if it doesn't have Linux or Unix on it (or if I can't put *nix on it) I'm not having it in my house.

I'm typing this reply on the Chromebook I got several days ago. I just use it for email and surfing the interwebz. It works great.

I got this on a $20. per month, month to month lease, cancel anytime, then, in like 30 months, it's mine. Made that deal a few weeks ago and then it was shipped to me. Yesterday I saw that they're selling them outright for $250. (I didn't click the initial link, if that is the deal linked to.) I'm probably going to just keep it a couple weeks longer, then return it and just buy a new one at $250. (By then, they'll probably be $50 bucks.)

That does look tempting - much better than the initial line of Chromebooks from a couple years back.

I like to rehab old discarded laptops with more memory, an SSD drive and Puppy Linux...but a straight up Chromebook for $250 almost beats that - and with no moving parts or fan, it might be quite the little powerhouse.
