President Obama told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday that the U.S. may boycott an upcoming economic summit in Russia and threatened further penalties if Moscow does not recall its military forces from Ukrainian territory.
In a 90-minute telephone call, Obama warned Putin that Russia faces "greater political and economic isolation," according to a White House description of the call. The president suggested the United Nations would take action for what he called a "breach of international law."
Obama made the threats as the two leaders publicly clashed over the deepening crisis in the former Soviet state.
Obama warned Friday that "there will be costs" to the Russian military intervention in the Ukrainian region of Crimea, a hot bed of opposition to the newly established, pro-Western transitional government in Kiev. Putin nonetheless sought authorization for military action from the Russian Senate, saying Moscow had a right to protect its military bases in the region.
Obama told Putin on Saturday that the U.S recognized "Russia’s deep historic and cultural ties to Ukraine and the need to protect the rights of ethnic Russian and minority populations within Ukraine." But he urged Putin to engage directly with the interim leaders in Kiev to protect those rights.

Russia has a pile of bases on Crimea, air bases and naval. They've had a long term love-hate going on with the Ukrainians. This is another round of it.

BTW, one of the first laws wich new government of Ukrain tried to do - is status of "not citizen" for all nonukrainians.

The US talking about countries respecting the sovereignty of other nations is ironic. China won't even drop a press release about something like this and the rest of the world is perfectly poised to write a strongly worded letter. This will end when Russia decides it should end.
Even more when Obama is being criticized in the US for not immediately swooping in with troops. Hearing John McCain drone on about Russia facing "consequences without further delay" reminds the world that as bad as Obama has been, it could have been even worse.

The people there obviously have some Russia issues left over from the USSR days, or the wouldn't have split in the first place. The last guy in charge before he went running off to Moscow to hide was Putin's bee-yotch, and the good folks of the Ukraine didn't like it. Obama's the guy who spent 90 minutes on the phone with Putin about this yesterday while people down the hall were calling for ultimatums and deadlines and military/economic threats.
