I've offered to teach the wife to shoot so she could carry a small piece, but she's dead set against it. I honestly don't think it's the gun itself she's worried about, but the finality of the situation if she ever had to pull it.

I'm more comfortable with the approach of situational awareness and not making yourself an easy target. The GSD is the biggest piece of that puzzle, after knowing where not to be in this city.
