95 years old and admitted to hospital today. A great, brave man. Biggest balls in history - well, perhaps he and Yuri Gagarin can share that honour. I'm not religious, but even as a kid I got choked,up at that quote - the best of us, I wish him well.

I saw the CNN clip. If one or two people booed Glenn, that's atrocious. If they were planted agitators, it's even more atrocious.

What's equally vile is that when our new president elect honored Glenn effusively and the vast majority of the crowd seemed very respectful, some Vanity Fair turd tweets a false picture of the event.

Fake news? Propagandist?

As an aside, in the very tumultuous times of the earlier part of my life, there were only a few events that brought all Americans unrestrained patriotic joy: Glenn's orbit, Armstrong stepping on the moon, and The Miracle On Ice. Not quite sure why, but Glenn's orbit is the one that resonated most strongly with me.

It looks possible that there were protestors at the time, who were booed at by the crowd rather then Glenn:

didn't the test pilots of the era, as reported in the right stuff, think the early astronauts were mere passengers, doing stuff that monkeys could do? "spam in a can" was the phrase, i think.

it's interesting to me that glenn's flight resonated so much. the nasa pr guys were right. a guy with a family was better for the program's image than a squirrel monkey named goliath.
