I don't get it. So, I mean, if I like blues music or Japanese food or hanging around in the Amazon, I'm.... I dunno, being a bad guy somehow.

I'm not looking for agreement here. I genuinely do not understand the argument.

It's OK to do all those things as long you maintain an appropriate emotional and social distance from the people, like an aristocratic European "explorer".

You don't understand the argument because the people making it are retarded.

The concept is pure bullshit.

Pure fucking retardation.

As a member of the capitalist, cisgendered, heteronormative, and privileged white western European cultural patriarchy, you can't be expected to understand the damage of cultural appropriation.

An unwelcome assimilation of cultural aspects of persecuted groups into a racist, misogynistic, Islamophobic, and homophobic mainstream Christo white culture is an act of cultural violence. It's essentially cultural rape, or even genocide, against victimized or otherized people.

Fortunately, we have students, professors, and a zillion administrators at elite colleges that the vast majority of white people will never set foot upon to lead us to redemption via controlling our thoughts, and hence our actions, by policing language and expression. Massive reparations are also in order.

I'm not sure how the slicing and dicing of victimization works but apparently the darker, gayer, and less male Christian you are the better.

It's on the Asbury Park boardwalk, near the Stone Pony and Lanes Bowling.

Probably not the best Korean fusion out there, but it's a lot funner than your parking lot grub.

The odd thing is, the majority of my knowledge of them comes from right wing talk radio telling me about them.

I've noodled about on this subject for the same reasons Timmy asks the question - it bewilders me. Besides the conservative stuff I've seen at sites like Town Hall or other sources, I've read a fair amount of articles from the left side of the equation.

Whether it's a real threat or a cultural blip like the 70's radicals that were part of my formative years remains to be seen.

Much of the media is complacent about left wing violence to suppress free speech.

When i hear people start to go on about these types of topics, the whole thing turns me into a grumpy old man. I start to look down upon other white 'men' I know (usually younger gen X / millennials who are better described as 'male people').
I would agree it's polarizing as it tends to push me in the direction of, "You cunts can all get fucked!".

The whole philosophy is so superficial that it subverts investigation and deeper understanding. It's easy to laugh at 'cultural appropriation', and the many other non-things that have been invented or popularised recently, and see it as 'stupid whinging millennials'. But there is a darker side, a controlling of thoughts and expression by diverting attention from rational investigation of the issue by creating a kind of insecurity for the individual as to whether they are thinking/saying socially acceptable things.

My practice is currently located in a beachside yoga studio (yes acres of smiling hot bodies in yoga pants and crop tops - hate me at will). Recently there was a discussion about yoga being 'cultural appropriation'. After a moment listening to the playground stupidity, I reminded them that most of the yoga as we love it in the west was actually born out of primitive gymnastic movements, from Scandinavia. That these had become popularised into India during the early 1900's... some time before yoga was 'appropriated' from India.

Instead of engaging with this new information, investigating its source, accuracy, influence etc, I was chided not only for 'defending cultural appropriation' but also that I might be blindly propagating a view that white men invented everything.

It became apparent that NOTHING would save this conversation from disappearing up its own ass. Any rational input would first have to go through the filter of "Is it ok for him to say that?" before it could even begin to be considered on its merit as actual information or knowledge that might change views. This is the darker side of these new imagined non-thing mechanisms (identity politics, cultural appropriation, patriarchy, animal-kin etc) which insidiously manipulate collective reality with surprising ease.

So yeah, they can all get fucked.

(of course, this in no way detracts from the wonder of pert lycra-clad buttocks)

I'm not sure that's what this is about.

I just read an article about a resurgence in the use of hallucinogenics, and there was an anecdote where some native at the conference stood up and was kind of pissed at how whitey had co-opted their religious ceremonies in order to get a trip on. Felt it diminished their culture. I think he was pissed about cultural appropriation.

Then I read an article about how hip-hop artists are getting tired of white performers co-opting hip-hop to get some cred (Alguelera, Hannah Montana,...) and then moving on.

The only thing that can save this conversation from disappearing up it's own ass is moar Dolezal.
Before I left Dolezal, I remembered that my editors had told me to make sure the photographer got a few pictures of us together. We were both sitting at the kitchen table, which provided an ideal photo opportunity.

The natural light from the sliding door by the kitchen was great for photography, but with our current seating arrangement, that light was falling on me and leaving her in the shadow. It is standard practice to have the interviewee sit in the best light, so I asked her to switch seats. The photographer thanked me for the suggestion, and I stood to allow Dolezal to take the chair I had been in.

Dolezal looked at me with a smirk and said accusingly: "Then you'll look darker and I'll look lighter, because the light's on me. I get it."

I realized that like all other black people who had challenged Dolezal, I had been written off as a bitter, petty black woman. She was concerned that the wrong lighting would make her look white.

Rebecca Tuvel is a 21st-century female philosopher who was gruesomely attacked by having her article stripped out of the philosophy journal Hypatia by a feminist mob that accused her of heresy.

Hypatia describes itself as "a forum for cutting edge work in feminist philosophy." So Tuvel, and assistant professor of philosophy at Rhodes College in Memphis, submitted an essay titled "In Defense of Transracialism" that compared the experiences of celebrity transgender Caitlyn Jenner to those of former NAACP executive Rachel Dolezal, born white but identifying as black and argued that the two "trans" phenomena should be treated similarly (Jenner has been widely praised but Dolezal widely condemned). Tuvel's article went through an anonymous peer-review process typical of scholarly journals and was ultimately published.

It's all word games within a closed system that proves itself and immediately disproves, a priori, opposing views.

You play their game, you lose.

Jesus, this is a stupid argument. There is no PURE monoculture, except maybe some 20 person tribe in the Amazon.
Individuals appropriate from individuals, families from other families, clans & tribes from clans & tribes, nations from nations. Any group that stands by, refusing to adopt/adapt, will likely perish, leaving the appropriators to survive.

I feel for young people in college today. Like a toddler learns the intricacies of movement, young students are learning emotionally how to begin their movement to adulthood.

Traditional cultural lodestones like religion, patriotism, traditional gender behavior & etc. lack vigor or are suppressed, sometimes furiously, in some areas. Something had to fill the void (something always fills the void) and it's an oddly inverse form of Puritanism complete with religio-political SJW dogma, speech codes, witch trials, and punishments akin to the public humiliations of the stocks and career executions..

I don't know what to call the condition other than Progressive fundamentalism, and like many fundamentalisms, it's rigid, closed off, and wants to control others.

donkey et al

this article in the atlantic is revealing about how pervasive the culture of "calling people out" is on college campuses. not just going after those on the right, though. a few of the examples are brain warping.

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/ar ... ts/524679/

the author, friedersdorf, has written regularly about free speech and censorship (generally and on campuses). i think his stuff is good.

Good read. Agree or disagree, he's always thoughtful about it. My takeaway is that no matter how far we evolve technologically, we're still tribal cave people yearning for acceptance and status. It's fascinating that one of the keystones of the modern world is thriving like an invasive species due to atavistic tendencies we forgot we had.

In the 70's easy access to birth control was a black swan game changing event. Looks like social media is another black swan that we'll have to evolve with.

excellent point.

all of us here in the u.s. are weeds from somewhere else.

from that perspective, cultural appropriation is how we have succeeded.

Maddening. Reminds me of that piece "I'm a liberal professor and my liberal students terrify me" (or something like that) from a couple years ago. That was my first exposure to this – uh, phenomenon – occurring on college campuses. Agree on Friedersdorf, I've read him on this & related topics before, he's pretty good. He wrote about the Yale college professor couple in the Halloween dustup about a year & a half ago. That was also maddening.

I can still barely believe this shit is happening. This has to be "recent", like the last 5-10 years. This "movement" or whatever you'd call it. Right?
