That was a fiction propagated by marketing Ninjitsu classes to roundeyes in the 1980s. The whole point of being a neenja in Feudal Japan was that nobody knew you were a neenja, you blended in until you struck! Going out in public with a sword at all when you're clearly not a member of the samurai class, let along carrying a sword that screamed NEENJA would be kind of foolish.

And most known Ninjas ended up being boiled in oil. I remember when I read Adams book as and seeing that and thinking "Well that's another cool thing shot down by reality."
They were not all that badass and when cornerd by a Samurai they were usually no match.
Years ago a Ninjutsu student visited Lamond's Dojo, not impressed at all.

I liked that story Lamond tells about the Ninjutsu guy who could "disappear" and wouldn't tap out.

As he cranked the fuck out of the guy's wrist he leaned in and softly said "OK Ninja, Dissapear."
The best one is after training Ninja man went on about how he was an expert in the art of dissapering and stealth, this back when the group had a SF Col. andother SF NCO, a former vietnam era LRRP and 2 Force Recon Marines.
" I'll go off and hide and you all count to 100 and then come find me."
So he runs off and the crew got in their cars and left.

THE SWORD OF GOD WILL SLICE THROUGH INJUSTICE AND IMPALE EVIL. IT IS ALSO HANDY FOR PRYING OPEN STUFF AND CUTTING UP VEGETABLES WHEN NECESSARY.
