Dog Owners - "Wireless Fence" or Radio Fence

If you have a dog and a yard, consider a wireless fence.
Advantages:
It saves the expense of installing & maintaining a regular fence. Fifteen years ago, I spent $150 on my Radio FenceTM and it has only cost me a little electricity ever since. One time I had to patch the boundary wire when I cut it with the lawnmower.
Most fences are ugly. The wireless fence is invisible, leaving your vista open.
If your yard is already fenced, but your dog is a fence jumper or climber, the wireless fence can help control this.
The dogs have the same freedom of movement as in a fenced yard - no tether is involved.
Limitations:
It is no substitute for a kennel - I would never leave my dog unattended for hours in the yard because on rare occasions he gets loose. (Just as many dogs do with regular fences.) When I leave the house, the dogs go in the kennel.
It does nothing to keep out other dogs (or coyotes).
It requires up to one week of training your dog before it "works."

Exactly my experience with the invisible fence. At one point I had the invisible fence and a real fence which worked very well to keep my huskies under control.

#1 cause of premature husky deaths is
escape
run
hit by car

Exactly how I lost mine. What a horrible day that was. Ugh.
BTW, I have heard that some breeds (beagles and some others) don't give a flying fuck about the invisible fence. they get zapped and don't care.

Even Alcatraz had one or two escapes.
The Radio Fence may not work for every dog. It certainly doesn't work for every dog, every time.
But it worked 98% of the time for my headstrong Airedale Terrier, and 99.999% of the time for my mellow hound.
Those results are as good as I'd expect from an ordinary fence.

It was more of a warning about specific breeds not caring. Ask around about it.
My neighbor has one for her two Chesapeakes, and it works 100% whereas one of them was over the wire fence all the time.
Of course, if the UPS guy puts a yummy-smelling package inside the Invisible Fence, well... I posted about that.

GDG, I haven't heard about specific breeds. I imagine there could be several factors that could make the radio fence not feasible: 1) an extremely stubborn or prey-driven dog, 2) an aggressive dog where "just one" escape could be disastrous, or 3) a n'hood with heavy vehicle traffic where there would be no second chance.
You have to adjust the system for a given breed's physical characteristics, i.e. trim a furry breed's throat so the shock prongs can contact the skin. Or upgrade to the adjustable power collar for a headstrong dog, as I did for the Airedale. And turn it to "11." I thought, "When sparks shoot out his ass, I'll dial it back." I never dialed it back.
Even if you had a headstrong breed, I'd recommend trying the radio fence. It's a cheap investment compared to building a fence. And, if you have a fenced yard and an escape artist dog, the radio fence could be a great solution as a supplement.

I got 3 dogs: border collie, pit/dachshund mix, and a coyote/husky mix.
Over the past 3 years we have had the fence I have only had one incident with the coyote/husky chasing a deer and just not giving a fuck if she got shocked. I have the collars that keep zapping if they break signal with the base, so eventually she gave a fuck.
The only other word of advice is that you should make a habit of inspecting the collars every week or so. This is just to make certain that the prongs are tightened and the battery is functional, especially if your mutts like to tussle like mine do.

Me and a cop friend of mine used to steal these from Menard's and then return them for store credit. Good little scam.
Fuck I was (was?) a degenerate.

Invisible fences are the easiest kind to steal.

I have had an interesting life T200. Yours seems to make mine pale in comparison. Hat's off to you sir.

I considered invisible fencing for my dog, but she's fucking nuts and would probably jump into the fence to get shocked on purpose.

This is awesome.
I hate Menards. Fucking corrupt family.
My parents live on a 3 acre plot in their subdivision and their invisible fence is great. To their credit they spent a lot of time working with their dog. To the point, even if the dog doesn't have the collar on it won't cross the "line" unless it hears the magic word. If we didn't have a 8' fence this would be an easy choice.

from a semiprofessional opinion, based on what I know and shared knowledge from colleagues-- what I've seen written above (with broad generalizations and caveats at play)- Johno-you're thinking about the right things.
Another potential downside, is that if an animal with a strong prey drive goes through the line chasing something, they may be hesitant to come back inside the fence line.
A vet school classmate of mine had a basset hound who used to stand close enough to the electric fence on her property so the warning buzzer would go off for hours till the battery in the collar died and then walk across the invisible fence line.

Another application: if you have an unfinished basement*, you can run the antenna wire under the main floor & quarantine your dog from certain areas.
*Don't know if or how it works with a finished basement ceiling.

We have one. Works awesome. AND you can take it with you when you travel, so you can set up a fence at Grandma's, vacation house, etc. Quick and easy.

Another application. Say you're having a big Halloween at your house in the woods. Say that there's a drunk chick who is obnoxious, and that she keeps gettin' in your face all the time, just being a general PITA. Say her name is Stephanie, but we'll call her Steph, 'cuz she likes that.
You can persuade Steph to put on the big huskies collar. Just feed Steph a little more bourbon. Coordinate with friends to fuck with her a bit, and she soon forgets she has it on.
My buddy was driving up the drive, hit the fence line, and Steph started screaming like she was being ass raped, and neither he nor Steph know what is happening. What does he do? Stops the car. Right in the transmission field for the fence.
Steph can't speak, all she can do is scream.
But then she pissed all over his truck, which is the only reason he got pissed.
Hypothetically, of course.

Beautiful. Reminds me of the old boys back home who talked a big retard into sporting the shock collar. They turned on the juice and he flipped the couch and yanked down the curtains.

It's not recommended for the Cane Corso or other mastiff breeds.

My dog is a bit of a Wayne Carini : "I chase cars" - it is his passion and would be the death of him but for the fence. Where I live fencing is an impossibility (the terrain just does not suit a "yard" but the radio fence has saved his bacon for the past 7 years. The original collar , and most of the original wiring - the latter , in places much modified and spliced as a result of annual burnoffs and arguments with mowers and brushcutters.
You gotta be careful in a power outtage...
All in all he's happy , we're happy and we've saved $$$ on vet bills (or replacement dog costs) and HVLN-type dog behavioural therapists. Great product , as long as you keep the wire intact and the collar charged up.
