2005 - 2012
This is the end of the line my friends. The decision does not come easy, but we've decided to voluntarily shut down. We've been fighting for years for your right to communicate, but it's time to move on. It's been an experience of a lifetime, we wish you all the best!
Where to now, any recommendations?

It's the end of the line for a lot of good sites.

Unfortunately yes - but The Pirate Bay is still going strong and is my new favourite go-to torrent site:

It is the only place that I consistently visit nowadays. The quality of torrents has really increased - probably because competition is going out of business.
This weekend I rented a DVD that had some problem (unless it was my ancient DVD player). It has 12 minutes of commercials, trailers and various garbage that you couldn't skip past. Actually, 12:06, because that is where it stopped the first two times I tried. I gave up, returned it to the store, went to the aforementioned website and had it - in 9 minutes.
Remind me again why sites like these exist and then tell me that the solution are more laws to protect Hollywood.

When you're using piratebay, what torrent client do you use?

I use plain regular BiTorrent. But then again, I don't have the slightest idea what the pro/cons of the different clients are.

Anybody care to explain exactly what the great difference between all these download clients is? Is one vastly superior/inferior to the others?

Some have spyware, some aren't free, etc.

Programming language, which doesn't impact end-user.
Operating systems that are supported, which is obviously a primarily consideration.
Keeping a stable build up and running costs money - thus, some have ads, premium versions and so on.
Some require more memory.
Some support magnet links.
Some are more customizable.
Lots of differences in encryption and whether you can use your client as a server and lots of other things that I don't really know that much about.
My criteria is:
1. Is it free? I would pay but lots of free clients are out there.
2. Is it easy to use?
3. Does it require minimal resources to operate?
Currently:
4. Does it support magnet links?
5. Does it let you prioritize downloads?
