"You may or may not be interested in grip strength, but outlasting your predecessors in longevity and in the bedroom is likely high on your list, and I would hope you’re interested in outperforming both in quality and quantity. Relentless self improvement, after all, is exactly what this site is about. And although I have absolutely no illusions about living to 300 (scientific models based on genetics predict the end of the road is coming at 115 for pretty much everyone), my obsession with relentless self improvement extends to aging as well, as I’ve no real interest in being what is traditionally considered to be an old man."

I haven't watched what Jamie has been up to lately, but it seems he has been struggling for a while. I wish him the best. I do feel his writing has been impacted negatively by it.

He used to have some interesting takes and the writing was entertaining. I read some of the newer stuff and stopped after a few entries.
It's flatly dumb to correlate grip strength in this way. Healthier, more vital people have a stronger grip. Training grip won't make you healthy and vital.

Yeah I don't know where to begin. He went to jail and had a falling out with his supplement company some years back, that I know. But the writing's all over the shop and makes some really, really tenuous links. I bought the 2019 book, despite being really overpriced, and surprisingly read it often because it's just a massive encyclopedia of training programs from athletes across the strength spectrum. I gave him some money for Patreon for a bit but stopped, the content just wasn't what I was after.Shafpocalypse Now wrote: ↑Sun Jan 09, 2022 3:22 pm I haven't watched what Jamie has been up to lately, but it seems he has been struggling for a while. The grip thing I wanted input on, cause my reasoning is like motherjuggs'...and also...surely you can't outgrip bad luck and terminal disease?

I couldn't finish the linked post. His writing is just too all over the place for anything longer than a couple paragraphs to be coherent.motherjuggs&speed wrote: ↑Sun Jan 09, 2022 6:43 pm It's flatly dumb to correlate grip strength in this way. Exactly. It kinda reminds me of Lance Armstrong's story about being in the hospital and a nurse comes in w. a plastic toy that measure lung expiration - he blows it up maxing it out and says "You gotta be kidding me - I do this for a living. Take that shit outta here" (or something like that). I hope I am mobile and strong till my end, but (even though I do it because I enjoy it) I don't think doing specialized grip work is any kind of guarantee at all. THAT SAID, I suppose it will make it easier to grab shit if I start to fall, or need to grab shit to help me pick myself up after.

Article is a mess.
Last I heard of this guy he was going all alpha whatever and then he got outed for doing gay porn. How did jail come into it?
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

"If you’re not caught up on the goings on in my life, I got into a crazy relationship the insane, Hunter S. Thompson-worthy details of which will remain unpublished until I write a memoir, spent most of a year lifting between 3 and 4 times a week packed to the gills with vodka, chicken fingers, and tater tots, then had the succubus leave me. I paid cash for the most expensive rehab in the history of the universe, met a highly vaunted NFL bust and a lot of doctors whacked off their faces on meth (which is troubling to say the least), failed to win her heart with my efforts and went utterly berserk with partying until I eventually ended up in jail resultant to a DUI. "

Nobody goes to jail for "a DUI." I knew a guy who did 30 days in Cook County Jail for "several DUIs in close succession."

A few years ago one of my colleagues was arguing with me till the foam started coming out of his mouth that the "stand up test" is the single best test to predict survival. The test is getting from the cross legged position to vertical without the help of arms.
The idea of a single test to promise you something good is very seductive. Cholesterol level is probably the best example.

Undoubtedly other stuff was at play, yeah. From memory I think he flipped his car and made it pretty spectacular as well. Or that could be his hyperbole.Grandpa's Spells wrote: ↑Tue Jan 11, 2022 5:24 am Nobody goes to jail for "a DUI." Yeah, that’s pretty fucking reductionist. As was noted, if you’re training your grip will be decent and you will probably live longer than the untrained.

It's ironic that he left this place after a few months back in what, 2011?, because it was presumably too fucked up for him.
I really like the old CnP blog, especially the profiles of "badasses". And he was a strong dude. Hope he can turn it around.

Although the Steves handled it for a while. Mike Mahler had a training log on here for years

Not for nothing but John Haack name-checked him recently, recollecting when he was going for Lewis' world record.Fuzzy Dunlop wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 2:46 am I really like the old CnP blog, especially the profiles of "badasses". And he was a strong dude. Hope he can turn it around.
The old blog was good fun. Some of the splits he had I still use and there was a deadlift program he devised that took me over 500lbs the first time and years later put a lot on very quickly too. Might need to dig it up again. That was the actionable stuff that's fallen by the wayside a bit.

Did Pavel ever post here? I don't remember him doing so. Mahler seemed fine, kept the log until he didn't. Dan John stopped posting but not for any hassle.
Dan John has done the best job, by far, of staying clear of fitness woo and gurudom. I felt like the folks here who have a book/product or two in them may have been rightly avoiding the nuttiness of the industry, but Dan is a good counterexample.

Pavel originally axed Garm, so as a proxy, pavel certainly couldn't handle being here.
Paul Carter, not here. Paul was on the P&B for a long, long time.
