I thought E4 was decent, however, it looks like they are going to do a time jump for E5, so, fuck.ing.gay.

However:
I've never been more bored watching a shootout. I don't know why Pizzolatto decided that there wouldn't be time to explore the "secret occult history of the U.S. Transportation System", but that's exactly the sort of thing that might have made this season compelling. At least Rachel McAdams is interesting to watch.

I hate this show. Season 1 was awesome, even with a weak finale.

This year... I can't quite see what the point is through 2.5 episodes I quit halfway through ep 3.

Allahpundit said it best:
Here’s something else: What new insights have we gained into any of these characters since episode one? How has, say, Ani Bezzarides’s character developed in the four hours we’ve spent watching this show? It hasn’t. Neither, really, has Velcoro’s, whose split personality as a corrupt brute and a guy who wants to be a better dad to his son was clear from about 20 minutes into the series. Woodrugh is deep in the closet and is tormented about it; that’s the extent of his “arc” through 240 minutes of showtime thus far. The only character who’s shown any development is — ta da — the dial tone Frank, who’s gone from self-assured casino boss about to swing the deal of a lifetime to harried husband who’s afraid he’s lost everything to violent gangster muscling his old associates for cash to get back on his feet. This is, for all intents and purposes, a show about Frank Semyon with the mystery of Caspere’s death a subplot rather than vice versa, which is … a disastrous mistake given viewer expectations, the weakness of the material Vaughn’s provided with, and his own difficulty delivering it convincingly. Even if that dynamic reverses in the last four episodes and this becomes a show about solving the mystery again, you’d still be left trying to explain why half the series was devoted mainly to Frank.

Yeah, I don't understand how it's the same people behind both seasons. I barely care enough about these people to remember their names.

I was hoping Vaughan was doing some kind of deep cover thing, like MC's backstory from last season. Looking less likely to be the case

I watched a recent episode (and nothing else)-- not sure if it's the acting or the directing, but Vaughan is terrible.

He's said a couple of things this season with a Wedding Crashers/Dodgeball delivery. Took me right out.

It's just bad casting, combined with the bar from the previous season being set extremely high.

The people who have typically fit in that kind of role as written are Gandolfini, Pacino, Walken, Penn, De Niro & maybe Brando. Guys who can do a lot of stuff non-verbally.

That's not Vaughan. He's always memorable when he's borderline manic. If you were having him play a gangster, you'd put him on the other side, doing something like a Ray Liotta, Joe Pantoliano, or Pesci.

He was pretty good last week, but the problem is he's playing completely against type, and it doesn't really matter how good you are if you're playing outside your range. Following McConaughey and Harrelson isn't doing him any favors either.

The big mistake is comparing it to last season. After last night's episode, I'm enjoying it again.

Piccolatto needs someone riding herd on him, he cannot translate his visions into script then screen the way, say, Kurt Sutter can. His fall out with his director buddy of last season is really telling.

The cinematography is great, the very last scene of E6, where the car hits the lights, then pulls screaming out on to the road with the huge moon hanging in the sky was a perfect scene.

Not sure if it was the writing, actors, or the direction-- but in the (one) episode I watched, even Colin Farrell wasn't impressive, and Colin Farrell is generally great. Did I just watch a bad episode, or is it worth waiting to watch this season from the beginning?

I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm enjoying this season. It started slow, and it has the worst intro music ever, but I'm into it.

That's some Leonard Cohen...an acquired taste to appreciate.

The last episode was okay, but I would much rather have had the extra hour of sleep I traded for it.

Detective Velcoro sure did shove a shit-load of Bolivian marching powder up his nose last night, didn't he! And how about the trim at that party.

Still not as awesome as Cohle getting blitzed out of his mind with the bikers and fucking shit up at that stash house...

I know we're not supposed to invite comparisons, Shaf's right about that. But the plot formula is the same:

1. Theres a BIG CASE

2. The BIG CASE gets "solved" half way through or so

3. They come back to the BIG CASE because something got fucked up/left undone

4. Somebody goes bonkers with schedule 1 narcotics and then something totally crazy happens

5. The BIG CASE will get wrapped-up nicely in the remaining two episodes

Same formula for both seasons. And they did it better in Season One.

He's the only one doing anything approaching decent acting.

None of them are even remotely assisted by the horrendous writing.
Nic Pizzolatto's novel Galveston was awesome. Yeah this season is down from last year, but Galveston?
Incredible.
