No love for Glenn Frey??

Post by DrDonkeyLove »

If you're in your 40's (maybe younger) to your 60's and owned a radio, he was a huge part of the soundtrack of your life. Had a 40 year run with the Eagles (with long interruptions) and did some great solo work. Even acted a bit in the greatest cheesy show of all time (Miami Vice).

Desperado or Smuggler's Blues would be the proud pinnacle of almost any songwriter's career while they were just a part of his extensive and varied discography. I respect Lemmy & Bowie but this guy wasn't only talented, he was part of our daily culture for decades.

Ever since his death was announced, his songs have been on shuffle in my brain. I particularly love, "Desperado," although I first heard Linda Ronstadt perform it.

For better and for worse, the Eagles' mix of rock and country has greatly influenced today's country music.

Probably geeky to love this song, but I do. This live version has some beautiful guitar work, too.

Love the Eagles, but watch the documentary on Showtime. Glenn Frey was a douchebag. Seriously, him and Henley cutting guys out of money on tours because they wrote the songs. His famous feud with Don Felder,

When Henley says in a statement how bullheaded he was in death, that just tells you he must have been an insufferable asshole. Same with the golfer Payne Stewart, when they talk about him they say how he matured and became a good person. Translation, asshole.

I like Henley's songs much better. One of These Nights, The Long Run, Those Shoes, Desperado, On The Border
Meisner's songs, Take It the Limit, Try And Love Again are all way better than Frey's songs though I like Lyin' Eyes and Take It Easy

Hotel California, a Felder song with Henley on lead vocals followed up with the lame New Kid in Town.

Not to disrespect this thread, and I like Glenn Frey alright, but Joe Walsh > Eagles. I hate the Eagles except for 8 or so songs.

Ended up playing third fiddle to Frey and Henley.

Best concert of my life was The James Gang. They wouldn't quit playing despite being ordered to by the popo and the venue. Eventually some tool turned off the power on them. This wasn't even in a major city, just my shit burg.

I've heard him interviewed on Stern multiple times. Seems like a gentle soul who finally has his demons at bay.
