I love how they justify shooting the dog, and ignore the fact that the outrageous behavior is what set the dog off in the first place.

"Up to" would imply taking milder steps, if possible, before using deadly force. Like showing up at the correct address. Or talking to the guy standing in his front yard before pointing a gun at him. Or using pepper spray on the dog....

If they really had a dashboard video that showed the dog attacking and the cop having no other option, all they would have to do is release it or at least let a small group of reporters view it.

Geezus. Cops have carte blanche. Hey, they claimed they apologized so they did their part huh? Fucking hell. I spent a handful of years cutting off people's cable and had countless encounters with all sorts of dogs including some big mean dogs (rottys etc). I was never bitten. I just never turned my back to the dog. If I backed up I did so facing the dog. For some reason this worked. As a back up I had a screwdriver ready to plunge into its skull but I never needed it. This fucking cop with pepper spray, a tasr, a billy club, and a gun used the gun on a dog that was "attacking" (read barking). What the hell are cops being taught?

The story here is that, a couple weeks ago, some guy's pitbull attacks another dog on Montrose Beach, the dog dies a couple days later. The guy with the pitbull refuses to give any of his information and leaves the scene. Folks call the police, circulate pictures, write in web-logs, etc. Now it turns out the guy is a cop.

The officer showed up at the address they were given, so to the best of the police officer and police dispatch it was the correct address. As to why pepper spray or a taser were not used, who knows, I have no knowledge of the training of the department or the officer involved.

As someone who has family working in law enforcement I am pretty understanding when it comes to officers needing to defend themselves. That said, this shit is retarded.

Lets just for the sake of argument say that he didn't have any other tools than his gun, and that this dog was rabid and vicious. The fucker only weighed 50 lbs!!!! If it comes lunging at him, kick it in the fucking head, then plug it. To open fire on an animal for simply barking would be the equivalent to the officer shooting a human that came running out of the back yard yelling, "what happened?!?"

This is a clear demonstration of excessive use of force, piss poor training, and retarded ass judgement rapped up in one officer.

My favorite part from the video was something to the effect of, "Officer dickhead is all beat up over this, lets lay off him" from the PR cop. FUCKING GOOD!!! He should be beat up over killing some poor innocent animal!!! That does not excuse him from accountability, his ass should be punished ON TOP of feeling like a douche.
