that is pretty nasty. A friend of mine did ~8 years for kicking someone like that in a street fight when we were 19. Something about mandatory minimums, no contest pleas or something that I didn't understand. I think the kid was in a coma for a little bit.
Long story short, that's a great way to fuck someone up.

It's referred to as a gentleman's sport for a reason.

In the UFC, the dude would have just hopped on the guy & choked him out. That's the way Gentlemen conduct Business.

It's not clear if it was legal or not.
The event was running under Pride rules, so elbows and kicks to a grounded opponent were said to be okay...but there's also information coming out that said if an opponent was on all-fours there were no soccer kicks to the head allowed, which is what happened.
In the video of the fight, as Huerta is thrown down to all-fours you can clearly hear the referee shouting, "no kick! no kick!", but he doesn't actually step in to stop it from happening.

Actually, they are fighting under something I've seen referred to as hybrid rules (?) and the ref says "low kick," not "no kick" which under these rules, means kicks to the opponent are allowed. I don't understand it but it was legal under those rules. You can see the Brazlian look up to the ref briefly to check, and then he kicks poor Roger in the mouth.

Well that just seems like an all around bad idea.

Correct me if I'm wrong but elbows are illegal under Pride rules.

No Kraj, that's exactly right; elbows are illegal under Pride rules. The rationale is that they are not likely to KO and they are more likely to result in a stoppage due to cuts. It makes a lot of sense, but I like elbows.
