An Israeli air strike Wednesday killed the head of Hamas' military wing, the first attack in a broader military operation against terrorist targets in response to an increase in rockets fired on Israel from Gaza. Hamas' military wing warned that Israelis had opened "the gates of hell on themselves."

What's the dead pool on Israel look like right now, with Syrian weapons flooding the region, Iran cooking nukes, Obama all out of give-a-fuck, and Hamas popping off?

I'm all in favor of a nuclear exchange in the Middle East. Partly for the possibility of cleaning the slate of there, as well as the economic benefit to Alberta's oilsands industry.

A pretty righteous kill. Boom goes the dynamite.

That's pretty damn precise. If only they could control the blowback.

The goal seems to be the opposite. Videos of your countrymen being killed by the enemy does not tend to have a pacifying effect.

Israel takes calculated risks, and obviously concluded that doing nothing was riskier than taking the offensive.

In four days, Gaza militias fired 160 missiles into Israel, just for the fun of it. Netanyahu invited all the ambassadors to Israel to meet in Ashkelon a few days ago. They met outside in an amphitheatre. He told them that if the sirens sounded, they had thirty seconds to get to the bunker, and explained that's how people live every day in the area (though those living closer to Gaza have fifteen seconds). Looking back, that was his way of telling them that Israel will be acting, and he wants them to understand.

Looks like Israel is aiming to kill top leaders (Jabri was known as the mastermind of kidnapping Gilad Schalit), and to wipe out missile batteries and weapon/ammunition warehouses. My guess is it has very specific targets that it will hit, and then seek to restore quiet.

It's always been a dangerous neighborhood. Israel has figured out the way to keep its people safe for the last 64 years, and my guess is others understand that there's no gain in attacking her.

Ashkelon is occupied territory so you could say the Palestinians are attacking their own territory. Also, the English words "scallion" and "shallot" come from the old Crusader name, Ascalon.

I think if the Iranians even looks like it's about to attack Isreal, they will pull out there shit list and knock the Islamic world down a few pegs.
