My wife's parents had one. It's ok if you just need a home based phone. They never had problems with it.

There are a lot of ways to go for a VOIP phone line (Voice Over IP = phone over the internet) in your home. This is probably the simplest, and the cheapest if you use it much. It's a good way to go if you want a second phone number for a home office or etc.
If you use VOIP as your only home phone line, make sure you understand that 911 works differently, and no power / no internet = no phone service. In an emergency an old fashioned landline is best.
