Or you can be more industrious and imaginative than some. I know quite a few people that own 3D printers and they use them to mock up custom parts or finalize design on a product they will either make themselves on a CNC lathe\mill or they will outsource to be manufactured.

I friend of mine designed a gun part using a 3D printer before he went to production. The 3D printer cut his design time & costs by a huge factor. The 3D printer allowed him to from idea to finalized model within a week.

Once metal 3D printer technology comes down market, the door will be open for people to engage in small scale custom manufacturing. Those that have vision will make money.
