Lenny,
As always, thank you for your time and sharing your expertise!
Thanks to you, I've picked up multiple books, been exposed to good music, and have a metric for evaluating (and re-evaluating) how to make my activities more in alignment with what makes me happy. Thank you!!
I copied your post into a notes folder on my computer, including the Tara Brach link. If you want to delete it, feel free.
In regard to my jealousy of an MA....
I have a strong driver from childhood of "Am I good enough?" My mom died when I was 8 or 9, and my dad was checked out for about 5-6 years after that. Although he became warm and loving again, there was a period where I thought his coldness and distance was due to a failing on my part. An, "If I was better, he'd love me" thing.
While diminished, those feelings still pop up.
In regard to journaling as you suggested....
I have the journal here, which is my main one.
I have a chores list on my fridge, which is a great canary in the coal mine for my mental health.
I have a few folders on my phone, for various things.
I approach my principles in a binary fashion. For example, did choosing to act despite fear benefit me? If yes, then I try to do it in all situations. Journaling here isn't as important, except for noteworthy successes or failures.
In regard to what do I want out of life....
That's a great question! I think I want three main things:
Connection: whether it's having a great conversation, feeling harmony with the ocean when surfing, or having the chess pieces dance when playing a game
Fun: I'd rather be smiling and laughing in the ocean instead of stone-faced waiting for the next wave.
Positively Impacting Others: this could be sharing a great training program for someone to feel good skiing, letting a friend crash on my couch when he's in a rough financial spot, or regularly calling a family member when he's in a bad mental space
Have I increased my ability to do each over the last 5 years? Yes. That's due to physical, mental, and spiritual growth. I hope it continues!!
