Man of Steel

Since it is not a movie where Lex Luthor is doing a land grab and is foiled by a ditzy blond, it's already off to a good start.

Overall, I liked it. A worthy villian, fight scenes worthy of super powered beings including the collateral damage it causes. I think the Jor-el and Lara roles, as well as Jonathan and Martha Kent roles were done well. Cavill does a good Superman. Overall though, I think a little less back story and a little more character development would have struck a better balance.

Two things about the story kind of bug me, but I won't spoil those.

Yea, I don't know how his super-orgasm didn't blow up that hooker either

No way! The background is what made this 100000000 x's better than any Superman anything ever!

This was one of the best all round movies I have ever seen.

By that I mean the mix of popcorn flick, cinematic images, deeper meaning, anology and heart, yes fucking heart!

It's well known here that I usually hate Superman, have not given a shit since between Superman 2 and reading Miller's The Dark Knight Returns as a kid about the character but done this way, I was as much a little boy as my 10 and my 7 year old who were sitting next to me.

It's nice to Believe in a true blue hero of mythic proportions, if only for 2 hours and 25 minutes.

"General I was raised in Kansas you can't get any more American than that!"

Fuck yeah!

And Zod was fucking great

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the movie, and have always been a big blue boy scout fan. But that scene with the general where he says he was raised in Kansas was one of the better character development points of the movie. Just one opinion.

I had been on the fence regarding seeing this but believe that I will pass now. Thanks for saving me the cash.

Ha! I thought the exact opposite after reading that.

The only important question here is how hot is Amy Adams in this?

Spoilers OK here ? Not to reveal but to hint at... IIAC, the Superman "legend" has been changed in one very significant way and in one not insignificant way. Given that, I thought the treatment was excellent. I kind of wish there was more story (character development) and (this sounds funny but) less action. After awhile, train cars flying through the air and people getting thrown through buildings just feels like it's going on and on and on. Appealing to 10 y.o.'s but enough already, we get the point.

No, no, no not enough action is why Superman the Motion Picture sucked, same with Superman Returns.

It's Superman not Midnight in the Garden.

I like how it's been changed, it needed that.

Alright, reasonable -and unreasonable :-) people can differ.

***************SPOILER ALERT (below)************************************************************

Still here ? OK,

1) I thought Supes does not kill. Interesting change;
2) Part of the "old script" IIRC, was the "love triangle" between Clark, Lois and Superman. Clark wanted Lois to love him, not for his powers but for being, well, Clark. Lois, put up with clumsy, buffoonish Clark as she dreamed of Superman who didn't notice her except when she was falling off a building and he'd catch her, put her down safely and take off. Now Lois is in on the secret.

1- He's killed before especially on film. He tossed Zod down an ice crevasse after making him mortal in II. He did not have to kill a now human weak Zod but he did, so snapping the neck of this Zod was the way to go and do note Zod was about to murder people.

It was the coming together of Kal-El's choice, he chose humanity, fully by killing the last of his kind.

2- I'm glad they did not do the usual Golly Gee shit with Clark. That shit is for a time when unmarried characters did not fuck. Superman probably gives out superfucks to Lois or at least let's her blow him? \:D/

I kind of wished they would change that bit even more, like no reporter Clark or him using a better disguise or having a way of appearing more different than Superman wearing glasses and slumping.

I stand corrected then.

Superman does not kill Zod or the others in Superman 2. You can see them being led out by police after their fight.

That must be from the director's cut, because I don't remember any of that.

I saw it in the theaters about 6 times when it was out, never saw that.

But even if that's what happened, so what? This is a new Superman for our times, while he can't go around killing every criminal that comes along, super villains should die. Hell if he did not kill Zod in this one, the people and governments would demand his execution after what he did. Superheros that do not kill such threats are shirking their responsibilities to the people they claim to protect. If you don't kill them they get out of prison and cause more death and they get another chance to win. (again why the Punisher is great, he does not have too many repeat offenders because he does all he can to kill them off.)

And in that scene he had no choice, kill Zod or let Zod murder those people and let's not discount how many people died in that battle, from the military to civilians crushed under buildings that went down because of Zod and Kal-El.

What you can accept some collaterals but can't eliminate the main threat?

Overly moralising superheros suck, that's something for a more innocent time, the fact that killing Zod hurt him emotionally is enough to define him as a good man.

Upon further investigation, it seems Superman 2 was really messed up behind the scenes. They started with one director, Richard Donner, and switched to a different one, Richard Lester, half way through.

Lester had to have at least 51% of the final scenes directed by him to get the credit, so he re-shot a lot of stuff.

In the theatrical version, that scene with the police was not there. Also in that version, Superman and Lois fly away, supposedly leaving Lex Luthor at the Fortress.

That scene was put in the version that was first aired on TV, and it is on the original DVD I have of it. (and not as an extra)

I agree with Darth though, Superman had no choice, and this does give the character a little more depth. It's just, generally, un-Superman like.

Zod was pretty legendary. If someone told me that Michael Shannon would be a villain in any superhero movie, Superman or something else, I would have punched you in the dick.

He was outstanding, and the way they fucked up entire city blocks with the special effects... I'm getting a little chubbed out over here.
