Modern merino wool is sort of the tech fabric du jour. Quite comfortable.

I got a pair for hiking a few years ago and recommend them over any of the synthetics I've had. Turn any pair of lightweight hiking pants into winter pants. And pass the 7 day hike no-stink test. Synthetics stink to high heaven after a couple days.
