Re: The couch thread

I guarantee you Dave Castro has made FU money off of CrossFit. For what he's put into the organization, deservedly so. Say what you want about him, that motherfucker gets shit done when it comes to putting on the games. And makes sure to get a contract saying how much he'll get paid in advance of d...

I haven't watched these: do they cover the Fomenko-esque twist about the length of the entirety of history perhaps being a mild fabrication of the Citadel?

I love it when entitled young people allow their chosen dogmatic thinking to sell them on an undergraduate, or even worse, a graduate degree in a social sciences field with marginal employment prospects like gender studies or political science and when they learn the hard way that they have six fig...

I got 7. But it wasn't fair - at one point I was given the option of either Czech or Polish. How the hell can those be told apart?

Don't do this to hotel staff - they're just minimum wage working stiffs who don't have better options. It's like doing it to your waitress at the coffee shop. Make sure it's EMS or Police or something that find you.

Lots of rhabdo reports coming in from WOD 14.5, from seasoned CFers even. But, you know, its the individual's responsibility to know not to fuck themselves up . . . Look, it's everybody's personal responsbility to know exactly how much work they can do and go no further, despite what their coaches ...

Funny thing. If weightlifting provided scholarships or a means to make a living (which wasn't the case before muscle driver came on the scene), we'd have a viable men's Olympic team. I see freaks on a regular basis who could outlift most of the guys on our current national team (said woman abuser i...

Re: Learning a language

To bounce off of what Terry said about Rosetta Stone, at least historically, they would basically model every course on Spanish. Sometimes by doing translation of the other course. Well, if the language you're learning has very different linguistic constructs (I'm looking at you, Russian or Arabic),...

Assimil! Go to how-to-learn-any-language.com and look on the forums for advice on using it. Universal opinion is that Rosetta Stone is overpriced and sucks. Except maybe for Spanish. People who say it's good are generally people who dicked around with it any never attained any real competence in the...

Yeah, Pig Latin is one of those things people learn about as kids that's really kind of easy but is completely mystifying to foreigners. All languages have things like that. One thing that commonly does that is archaic idiomatic constructions that come up in folk tales and kids songs, so everybody w...

Season 3 is a little weak so far and the books are awesome. Unfortunately, if you can't read very quickly, you might be put off by the books because they are looooong. If you go slowly, you will forget important stuff and get bored. But, yeah, it's some good TV.

They can get away with it for a couple reasons: 1. they know people like you will likely sign on for the long haul. 2. the real point of the NRA is protecting gun manufacturer interests, but it's useful to have a lot of people signed on for various reasons. not that there's anything wrong with eithe...

I think part of the problem with fixing the pay-and-prestige issue is that it takes so long to boil through the system. When you bump up the pay, I mean, I don't know that an incoming college freshman is going to immediately say, wait, teaching is now a prestige profession, I'll major in elementary ...
