The parts to make one of those can be found at Radio Shack.

The Economist is always doing articles about these printers. The last article I read said that this is how factories will run in the future. They will just start printing out cars. Definitely some Star Trek shit.

Right now they can even print chain mail and violins that play.

We used an ABS printer for some of the more complex parts of the sub model we built for tank testing for our final class- planes, stern and propulsors. Does good detail work. If I remember I will post pics when I get a chance.

They are big here in Detroit for prototyping plastic components and trim parts, or electrical connectors.

They are also big in the dental industry for building models of peoples mouths for fitting bars, implants, abutments...

The one in the video is working via extruding melted plastic. I like the Z-Corp models, which basically use an HP inkjet print head to print a glue onto a starch layer. Those units can print in color, and you can do some cool assemblies.

This was kind of my point about how it's a pretty useful tool. Here's the pics I mentioned before. Scale is 1/30th. The Bow planes are simple, but couldn't be cut on the hull section by the 5-axis milling machine because of the material we are using, so we went this route because of the accuracy of scale and tolerances of the printer. Cost was reasonable at about $25/cubic inch and didn't hurt in making the choice either.

Just to deflect the question, the cuts in the shrouds are where they intersect with the non-pressure hull of the model.

Can it print a 3d printer that prints novelty 3d printer models I can later sell for a handsome profit?

They have systems now that use a laser and powdered metal to make metal parts. Expensive to do, but otherwise amazing.

Those are old, man. Like 3 months ago.
Now they have systems that use a laser and powdered humans to make new people. Takes about 9 months to do, but other than that it's pretty amazing.
