Airbags wouldn't have made much difference in that one.

I live in a snowy place. Fortunately our highway has a wide median strip because I see SUV's in the middle of it all the time. Some people think they have magic traction powers...and are mistaken.

The vid below is from the highway near my house.

Ah, physics: it's not just a good idea -it's the law.

And since we're kind of on the subject of "holy shit" car wreck videos...

Nice example of what people mean when they say, "I had no time to react, it just happened".

And then there's the only video I've seen that actually made me flinch:

First vid is pulled.

Shit happens fast on the highway. Worst I had was when a big old turkey flew smack into the windshield of our Wrangler at 70MPH. Thankfully, I saw it coming a second before impact, and braced myself to hit the fucker on my terms.

I just saw the reason why it got pulled from the YouTubes...you can see the driver of the white truck is what makes impact with the POV windshield.

More americans are killed on our roads every year than in Iraq and Afghanistan and all training accidents combined. Our total deaths on the road since we started driving cars outdoes the total for all American war deaths from 1776 to today.

Yet we strap our kids in and take them for rides but many of us scream how our kid will never go to war.

As someone who has survived being launched out of a rolling car at about 60mph and has walked away from some shit I should not have, I worry more about giving the keys over to the boys more than anything else.

Going to show them crash vid, obituaries, pics and testimonials from people fucked up on the roads and scare the fuck out of them before they get their learners permits and all of them will be going to a driving school that teaches high risk driving skills before ever being let out on their own... in a BIG FUCKING TRUCK!

Seatbelts & airbags make car crashes surviveable. Unless you tangle with a semi or an immovable object, like a bridge abutment or big tree.
Without a seatbelt, you are subject to being ejected, or smacking into things that are harder than you are. A couple months ago, my crew responded to a rollover accident where the unseatbelted driver's head got squished between the car roof and the pavement. One hemisphere of her brain shot about 50 feet down the road.

This exact scenario was my first really bad wreck when I started. Besides the gore, what made it the worst was the fact that it was a teenage girl, her sister was buckled up and unharmed going bananas in the ditch, and sister had called mom who showed up at the scene as well.
Dead people have never bothered me much, but the reactions of their loved ones suck.

Same here on my first fatality. There something like 5 or 6 kids in the car and the only one killed was the one sitting in the middle in the backseat with no seatbelt.
