Orthodox Jews Abuse Children & Shun Whistleblowers

The first shock came when Mordechai Jungreis learned that his mentally disabled teenage son was being molested in a Jewish ritual bathhouse in Brooklyn. The second came after Mr. Jungreis complained, and the man accused of the abuse was arrested. Old friends started walking stonily past him and his family on the streets of Williamsburg. Their landlord kicked them out of their apartment. Anonymous messages filled their answering machine, cursing Mr. Jungreis for turning in a fellow Jew.

I don't know anything about Jewish traditions though know enough that "Jewish ritual bathhouse" is code for something.
Also, if you're a member of a fundamentalist religious group, ass raping and looking the other way has to be as common as a morning coffee is for the rest of us.

So to this community, reporting a crime to someone not part of the community is worse than the crime itself? What is the foundation of this belief?

That they're crazy. There's no excuse or basis for anything even remotely like that within the jewish religion.

Not that dissimilar from what we see in other fiercely insular societies. Even football coaches get protected. The fear of outsiders is greater than their fear of criminals within. It's like where the Catholic church was ~20 years ago.
This part is promising:
In Crown Heights, where the Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic movement has its headquarters, there has been more significant change. In July 2011, a religious court declared that the traditional prohibition against mesirah did not apply in cases with evidence of abuse. “One is forbidden to remain silent in such situations,” said the ruling, signed by two of the court’s three judges.
Since then, five molesting cases have been brought from the neighborhood — “as many sexual abuse-related arrests and reports as there had been in the past 20 years,” said Eliyahu Federman, a lawyer who helps victims in Crown Heights, citing public information.

true, but 33% of the judges were not in favor of the ruling.

Sooth..We have a shitty enough time following one standard of justice in this country without bringing silly hats and burning bushes into the mix.

Basically true about football coaches, except that there the fear is of breaking a winning dynasty, rather than any institutionalized fear of being trucked off to the ovens in cattle cars.

These people are a national treasure. How dare you speak ill of them?! Where would we be as a country if we didn't have these welcoming folks taking over our neighborhoods, building their bathhouses, and imposing their laws and morals on us?
