Anybody have any experience with an outsourced CxO role, targeting the SMB sector regardless of vertical? What would a ballpark range of hourly rates look like, in your estimation?

EDIT: oh, ok. Just in case you don't click on links. CxO is newspeak for "Chief Experience Officer". The idea is that in the SMB (Small-Medium Business) sector, a CIO (Chief Information Officer) isn't exactly a fit, and neither is CTO (Chief Technology Officer). What's needed is a blend of the two: there's not enough data, nor datamining for the CIO role, but there is some. There's not enough technology - no SMB is going to build and manage private cloud-space, for example - but they clearly need some techhnology. Like Goldilox, a CxO is the right fit for this business sector.

In many cases, I don't think there's even a need for a full time CxO on an ongoing basis. A company might need a CxO full time for a year, as they go through a key business change. But that need might quickly scale back to a very part time role after that change.

So, for companies who want to outsource this position, what's a reasonable rate for an experienced CxO? $200-300/hr?

Is this something to do with role-playing games? I never got into Dungeons & Dragons so I'm lost here. What class does Chief Experience Officer fall under -- warrior or mage?

Bob, I don't know, but that sounds like a ton of fun. Report back with your salary range (it can be wide) if you end up going this direction. That being said, I think you've chosen the wrong board to make your post.

Bob, unless you have a full book of business ready to go, traditionally the key is to get your first couple customers, over-deliver, and bump rates from there. For somebody who is kicking ass and is working with the typical client on a somewhat limited basis, those numbers seem very reasonable, but I would start lower.

It partly depends on industry. I would go extremely specific on niche to start out. Makes it easier to target customers.

To clarify: I've been whoring myself in the IS/IT world for 20 years now, and have done OK. I have a partnership opportunity that sounds good on paper, with an established company willing to market and sell this concept and services, and taking a reasonable cut off the top of billings. This concept is not too far from what I do presently, just sort of better packaged.

They claim that they can easily bill me at 200-300/hr for this, and bill me as full as I would ever want, up to 90hrs/week. There's some other aspects to the proposal which are attractive as well. I'm guessing that 200 is probably the top end for now - as I build a rep amongst their client base, that can get bumped.

I was curious on what others thought the market would bear.

My IT company has about 120+ employees, and the CIO has made anywhere from $80K to $110K per year, depending on their backgrounds and what they could negotiate. The $110K guy used to be CIO of Nebraska Furniture Mart, one of the nations largest furniture retailers.

OTOH, we are on our 5th CIO since the NGO was started - whoever has the role has to deal with the city and county boards and a bunch of departments for each, and they burn out fast - our 4th CIO said it was like dealing with 50 bosses all at once.

Jeez...110k is peanuts for a CIO heading-up even a small IT shop of 120 in Omaha.

I'm by no means a market expert, but...I will say that I've come across other companies in similar straits. It's tough for a company of that size to pay somebody enough; it's also sometimes quite difficult to see a long term career as CIO in a company that size - unless, of course, it's in the information business or a startup.

That's sort of where my idea comes into play.

As an example, I just talked with a business which is fast-growing, has their data up in the cloud, 50 locations across the US, a WAN connecting everything...and things are falling apart. They clearly need a seasoned player who knows technology and telco to come in and clean house, and develop a systematic approach. It will be a huge challenge, for about a year. Then...probably not so much, at least for 5-7 years.
