Been here for a week. What a fascinating place.

Crime center of the universe. You live in Security Villages or Enclaves that have electric fencing, barbed wire, and guards. They actually have signs for areas that have high carjacking potential like we have signs for deer crossings. I'm staying in a guest house with all of the above and a gate manned 24/7 by a guard. Like living in SE DC or East LA.

Modern country. Went to the mall and visited the Cinnabon store. Modern telecomms, toll roads with rest stops, traffic, clean drinking water and food, AWESOME restaurants, etc.

Still a split country. Painfully obvious that whites and blacks live in separate universes that happen to occupy the same physical space. Plenty of mistrust to go around. See crime comment above.

Somehow managed to peacefully transition from one of the most socially unjust societies to one forging ahead to justice. The whites had to give up the reins of power, the black majority has taken it. The beauracracy that really runs a country remains white. Leadership is black. Blacks (hopefully) understand that if the country tanks, it is Their Own Damn Fault. Lots of walking on tenterhooks accompanies. A work in progress...could still fail easily. Commitment to make it work by all that I talked to on both sides. They can look at Zimbabwe and see just how shitty it could turn out, and are committed to not suffer a plummet like Zimbabwe did.

SA is the shining light of the continent, and so they have an illegal immigration problem that makes ours seem laughable. Illegal settlements (squatter camps) pop up with city limits of Johannesburg and have 100,000 people before you know it.

Beautiful country. Cape Buffalo, Lions, Widebeests, etc.

LONG %^&-ing flight to get here. 15 hours sitting in a seat on an airliner. Not close to anything else on the planet.

Rugby is on the TV on some channel every hour of every day.

Not fantastic. Offhand, I can think of half a dozen or more people that I know who were either born in or grew up in the country. All are either in Asia or the US now and say that living in SA wears on you - it's good, if you have money but needing to be behind bars in your own house gets old. All are either white or ethnic Chinese and say that they feel that, someday, things are going to go to pieces even more than it is already, racially.

It is supposed to be a fantastic place to visit.

Big issue with "white flight" and people getting the heck out of the country, taking their expertise with them. That is, they seem very used to being a class above. But they land in a place where that kinda doesn't exist, so they try to turn anything into a reason to look down on others. Almost comically so.

In an otherwise 99.9% stupidly tolerant and friendly place like Australia, that sort of shit doesn't sit well. So they tend to form 'social enclaves'. Probably a symptom of the SA situation, as described in above posts.

Some time back the military channel (I think) did a piece on one of their paramilitary organizations and it was fucking wild. It appeared they were in a gunfight practically every day.

I can think of the South Africans I have met and I would safely say half are assholes.

An incredible number of their police get murdered each year.

I just got back from going for about 3 mile run through some neighborhoods. Beautiful houses, all with electric fencing and signs advertising security services. Lots of people around, talking and smiling, so a good day.

I asked the guy I met with today about whether he thought it could end badly. He was optimistic, due to their strong history of good governance, banking system, devotion to education by the leadership, etc. Lots of problems, but making an effort to move forward. Good for them.

I've never met a nice South African.....

Right there might be good indication that there is a gaping hole in the ship and the bilge pump won't save it.

Bottom line is that much of SA was sparsely populated and the whites built everything and won the territory in battle just as we did America from the Natives. Lossing war's is suppossed to suck. The masses of blacks moved there to take advantage of the work and $$$ to be made. They knew what they were walking into as far as Appartied.

The guy who runs the guest house we are staying at is Afrikaaner. He and his wife are wonderful people. We've talked a ton, great guy. He said two things which I'll remember, among many great conversations, when talking about all the issues and where it could go. Looks grim to me, but then I've been here all of a week. He said:

- The worst never happens in South Africa
- We (the whites) will NOT let the country go down the tubes. If we have to eliminate a few to make things right...

The country is run by negros and everyone is surprised it's falling apart? Name one decent place run by blacks you'd choose to live in and raise a family?

Went to an awesome national park today. Near Sun City of Little Stevie fame. The route there went through a township where we had been warned to be very careful. I voted it the least best place to break down in the universe. Directions were to pass through only in daylight.

On the way back, coming through the township, my driver put the left side right through a monster pothole. Blew the left front tire and dented the shit out of the left rear rim. Of course this happened in the township, in the dark.

Tried to change the tire, couldn't get the lug nuts off (fucking rental car) and folks were starting to gather. Lowered the car off the jack and drive it on the rim for 5 miles through the township until the highway and a weigh station. Got it swapped out there.

Yeeha! The rental car folks are going to be impressed when they see their old left front tire. Rim ended up potato chipping. Heh.

Apparently you do have No Apparent Fear Of Death, if you didn't schedule "Murphy Time" in your excursion. Dumbass.*
