karate movie overdose

Just got off my 16 hour flight back from SA. Watched crouching tiger, hidden dragon, house of flying daggers, curse of golden flower, and kung fu hustle. Least favorite was flying daggers, which I had seen before and did not hold up as well under repeated viewing. Tiger/dragon on the other hand is imminently rewatchable, although the young lady badly needs a spanking. The golden flower movie wins for best mass ninja attack and random use of awesome colors. Kung fu hustle was surprisingly funny and good.
16 hours down,10 to go!

My recent list...
Shaolin vs Lama (Excellent)
Executioners from Shaolin (Very good...don't fuck with Bak Mei)
Mad Monkey Kung Fu (pretty funny, and not bad)
Martial Arts from Shaolin (early Jet Li movie...some funny scenes and tons of crazy action)

Mad Monkey Kung Fu is one of my all time favorites. The monkey training scenes with Lau Kar Leung are legendary.

My big quarrel with "Flying Daggers" is that A) the plot doesn't make a whole lot of sense (everyone is undercover, sort of, and the dancers' journey to hook back up with the FD only succeeds because she is incredibly lucky - she comes within a hair's breadth of death at least twice. Meanwhile, the head of the geisha house (or whatever she is) simply leaves and shows up near the end without having had any of the dancers' problems. And B) the movie spends a lot of time and energy gearing up for the final showdown between the Tang and the HOFD, and near the end we see the Tang soldiers creeping into position for the final assault...but then we never see it, settling instead for the operatic ending of the romantic triangle. I realize the movie was really about the romantic triangle, but I still felt cheated.
Golder Flower was invigoratingly depressing in a way only grand Hong Kong spectacle can be. Liked it enough to buy my own copy.

This +1.
I also really enjoyed Kung Fu Hustle. Ip Man is a lot of fun too. But one of my favorites is Iron Monkey.

Yep, the second time through I paid more attention to the details of the plot, which was a mistake. Just need to stick to the eye candy.
In Golden Flower, I love the way the guy would announce "the hour of the rat" or whichever. Wish I could get a clock that told time that way.
Gong Li is insanely hot.

I loved Kung Fu Hustle. The same bunch did Shaolin Soccer, which was surprisingly good.

It was great up until the arc where he became a Drunken Break Dancing stylist, and then it kind of fell apart.
Overall, it's a great movie. I liked the homage to the venom stylist archetype, but I also think it tried to rip-off Jet Li's 'Fearless' in some of the story elements and that was a little too recent to get away with.

I have his entire Oyama trilogy, and this one is my favorite by far.
